B elieving that the Bentley, with four w heel drive sy stem and a big, powerful engin e, can handle things worse th an a Welsh countryside road, Jame s takes the car onto a Wels h stag e of the World Rally Champi onship, with Kris Me eke behi nd the wheel, and Jam es being the co-driver. Despite the car ha ving less g rip, more w eight, an electronic handbrak e (unsu itable f or usage on a rally stage) a nd James not bein g profi cient at giving pac e notes, the Bentley was act ually fast er than one of the full WRC ca rs. J erem y cheers Damian up by making a separate board for snow ( he justs put the time underneath and to the si de of the fas test lap t ime on that board) and says that he is the fastest driver ever on their snow board. Ch allenge J eremy attemp ts to bu ild a car smaller t han the Peel P50, naming his creation the P45. It was ba sed on a quad bike , with bodywork f itted, designed to wrap around the driver . He then presente d his idea to the 'Dr agons' in a Dragon s' Den styl e format. All of the dragons de clare themselves ou t and back in the studio, Richar d concludes that for the P 45 to be put in produc tion, Jerem y would h ave to be dead. 149Se ries 19, Episode 23 F ebruary 2013 Mick Fleetwo od Ch allenge, Pa rt 1 In another ch allenge, the presenter s picked th ree su per cars to take on an epic ra ce. Since it was Hammond's turn to select the chal lenge loca tion, the team wen t to the Western United States. Jeremy selected the Lexus LFA, James chose the new Aston Ma rtin Van quish, and R ichard took the SRT Viper. Aft er a brief drive in the Neva da desert, the trio headed to L as Vegas Motor S peedway, specifically the drag stri p, to compete in drag races orga nized by the La s Vegas Police Depa rtme nt; wh om organized it with the theory tha t allowing people to drag race, le gally , at a closed circuit, would prevent street racing. Despite the hig h pe rformance of their cars, the trio were be aten by modified production cars , and 4WD cars, in e ach of th eir drag ra ces. News Jeremy comes up with a solutio n on how to solve t he crisis a ffecting Britai n's town centres sacking all tra ffic wardens an d removin g doubl e yellow lines. The trio then review a Chinese prod uct designe d to stop d rows iness behind the wheel, before they took a first lo ok at the 2013 Jaguar F -Type. They prai sed its styli ng, but criticized its high pri ce tag of £60,000, as well as i ts target audience. James menti ons Peuge ot Citroen's car inte nded to run on compresse d air; Jeremy attempted to use a fi re extinguisher to demonstr ate, but faile d after only cau sing himself t o turn slowl y around . Challenge, Part 3 Departing W illow Springs, the group headed for Los Ang eles, California. I n order to do real w orld testing, Richard devis ed a chal lenge to see who could burn the best elev ens. Th e three instead ended u p drawing a p hallus and left LA. The team the n stayed for a night in Palm Springs. However, the produc ers gave them a final ch allenge. The three would drive from Palm Spr ings to the Mexican bo rder at Calexic o the following morning, and the last to make it to the Mex ican b order would h ave t o travel in to the count ry itse lf to drive the Mastre tta MXT, a Mexican sports car made fun of by the pr esenters in an earli er series, for a later segment on the show. In reve nge for taking them t o Ameri ca, Je remy and James s abotaged Ham mond's Viper, cau sing h im to lose 10 minu tes in the race. Despite making a sto p for fuel, Jerem y made it to the finish line firs t, with Jame s in sec ond. Richard th en wal ked to the border bei ng the last person t o arrive. C hallenge, Part 1 The prod ucers have reserved a sing le ticke t to a football match at the San Siro in Milan, Nort hern Italy. The trio have a race from Wembley Stadium to the Sa n Siro. Jeremy drives the Shelby Must ang GT500 and Richard and James travel on publi c transport. Similar to the previous race to Monte Carlo, Richard and Jame s are n ot allowed to use a ny cars, an d Jeremy is not all owed to use any trains . Accor ding to J eremy, since the last epic race, th e trains hav e become fa ster and b oats have become slower. Ric hard and James opened up a big lead whil st trav elling on the Eurostar, and arrive in Paris while Jeremy was still crossing the English C hannel on a ferry. After reachin g France, Jeremy discovers that the Mustang only holds 50 litres in its fuel tank. Aft er leaving Paris, Richard and James discuss what to do upon arriving in Milan — as t here are two of th em but only one tic ket. Hundreds of miles behin d, Jere my ends part 1 o f the challenge stating out lou d, I'm gonna lose! Star in a Reasonably Price d Car Amy Macdonald drove the Kia Cee'd around the Te st Track in 144.4. During one of her practice runs, A my accidentally destroyed o ne of the runway lights, which Jeremy gives to her a fter revealing the lap time. Challenge, Part 2 The high speed TGV slo wed down as it approached the mou ntains that surround Northern Italy. Jere my began to catch up and wa s ne arly neck and neck with th e train, un til road works at the Mont Blanc Tunnel slow him down. The train starts to accele rate again a nd reac hes No rthern I taly ahead of Je remy. Richard a nd Jam es use a tub e net work to get to the streets near the finish line. James main tains his o pposition to ru n on television and Richard runs off alone to fi nd the finish line, which i s at a bar in the IM Villa Veuve Cl iequot. James then ass embl ed a bike which he had hid den in one o f his bags and r ides to t he bar, only to fi nd that Richard is a lready there and h as won the race and the ticket to the football ma tch. Jeremy d emonstrates the complexity of modern c ars' dshboard. Richard brings a Fiat M ultipla and both mo dify it . Jeremy breaks the da shboard and replaces it consideri ng i t to be t oo complicated for e lders. Richard as ks for the airbags say ing that it is dangero us fo r the elderly who are as d elicate as children, and that he n eeds it for a safety f eature. Jeremy makes a speedomete r which reads 20 mph at the top sp eed, he also uses an old design switch for rear fog light whi ch does noth ing. Jeremy installs a pet-cage and replaces the back seat with high se at chai rs and the Fiat badge with a Rover one. They paint it in beige after observing the shade of a h earing aid. Richard uses water-resi stant fabric as se at covers , and while stitching hurts his eye . Th ey c ompl ete the car and end the part 1 wit h Richard wearing heavy bandages over his left eye. News Vol kswagen will launch GTI versio n of the new G olf and GT version of Up w ill be launched. Kia will launch the Pro C ee'd GT. The Mi ni Paceman i s launched, and the trio mock the front end of the car, claiming tha t it looks depress ing. The t rio agree th at the British are the best dri vers. Alfa-Romeo releases photographs of the Gloria, in which the trio m ake fun of i t's name. Ri chard had arrived la te so James and J eremy had atte mpted t o play tennis with cars (which has a lot o f editing). Review James r eviews the n ew Range Rover in Lon don. T he new car is compl etely red esigned, 400 kg lighte r due to Aluminium body, has active su spens ion, new g earbo x, minimalist da shboard and offers b etter comfort. Ja mes then races it against T erraMax at Nevada Auto motive Test Centre, Neva da. The race was to a hill 10 mile across, pass ing th rough roc ky terr ain, hil lock, mud, river and sand-tracks. TerraMax was switched to drone m ode during the rac e to defl ate th e tyre s and take a short-cu t. The Range Rover's automatic Terrain Resp onse System is demon strated. J ames take s a longer route to ascend the hill but still wins the race . At the studio, the t rio consi der the driverless cars to be not very practic al. T he car has large front bumpers made up of foam, lar ge rear- view mi rrors, squea king ball u nder the brake-ped al, larg e magnif ying-glass on the d ashboard, sat n av (voiced b y Ri chard Briers) with o nly four destinatons. The car has an artificial cat on the roof whi ch later fell over on t he way of Bin go hall. R ichard later sho ws his system to f ind the location of parked car (the car a ctivates a fla re and then re leases a balloon). Jeremy sho ws that the radio only pl ays Horse of the Year Show theme on a lo op, which bot h late r find to be irre sistible to clap along. The name of the car is rev ealed to be The James. They pick up th ree elder ly ladies from a pen sioners' home for road -testin g and drive them to a bowling club where i t is sh own that Richard fitt ed the airbag a t the rear for parki ng assist which inflates the airbag on close prox imity. Jeremy and Richard buy food for pic nic, choosing on ly British foo ds. They attach the shopping trol ley to Tow hitch an d hea d for picnic . The roof of the car leaks as it r ains. Jer emy and Ric hard end up choosing a picnic spot on roadsid e where they find the tro lley to be damaged during reversin g and the food to be soaked, however they ate the food which was not ruined. The next day both leave Chris tchurch and Jeremy shows his syst em to prevent the ca r fro m be ing driven on the wrong side of the road, the car initially sounds ala rm and later the tyres, do ors a nd oth er parts of the car explode which stops th e car and renders it immobile. The episode was shot in 2012. Challenge, Part 1 Buy used estate ca rs for up to £1,500 in Britain an d repor t at a small village in rural Uganda. They s et off an disco ver t hat explori ng isn't as difficult as first thought w hen they go on a nice easy drive an d find Lake Victoria, of w hom the Vic torian Explorers t hought was the source of the Nile. However they are then told that it is not the actual source o f the Nile and there were two other d ispu ted locations for it, one in Rwa nda and one in Burundi. Howe ver, Jeremy Clar kson insisted that both of these lo cations were wrong and dec ided to head w est towards Lake Edward to see w hether th ere was a link between that lake and Lake Kivu in Rwanda. In t heir jou rney west, where they visit th e Entebbe A irport and from there see th e Ford Scorp io Estate back -up car. They continue into Kampala, Ugand a's Capital City whe re they get held up in a traff ic jam overnight, th e most hurrendous traffi c they'd ever seen. They continue on well-maintai ned highwa ys west finding their trip incredibly easy before r eaching the town of Mbarar a in the southwest of the country, via a stop in Jezza, a village in Mpigi District. Here they stay in a disgusting hotel, after driving through tea plantation s in an a ttempt to discover a lovely teah ouse hotel, which in the mind of Ric hard, was bound to fo und due to tea programmes he'd seen. In Mbarara the y stayed in the Economic Lodge with Jeremy hav ing a bed with faeces on it. They left the hotel d isgusted before Richard has the idea to make the c ars 'hotels'. James modifies his Volvo by adding a library, Richard adds a cooker and Jeremy adds a coffin . The coffin he uses to put his clot hes in, he sl eeps on Egyptian Cott on. They l eave for Lake Ed ward, cam ping overnight there because of its beauty before heading in search of the river h eading f or Lake K ivu. None of the rivers connect the lake as they all head east rather than south . They give u p, leaving them disa ppointed . Then Jeremy looks at a map a nd disc overs the sourc e of the Nile must be o n the other side of Lake Victoria. His reas oning is th at the Mediterranean Se a is effectively an inland sea and s o Gibralta r is the true mout h of the Nile, rathe r than Alexandria in Egypt. After disco vering this they decide that they must drive straight to th e othe r side of L ake Victoria to get to the so utheast coas t in Tanzania near the Serengeti.
