The H uayra al so set the fastest time on th e Top Gear Test Track in the hands of The Stig, 113.8, beatin g the prev ious record, set b y the Ariel Atom V8. News The Daci a Sandero is n ow on sale in the U K. The Merc edes-Benz SLS AMG Black has been updated to p roduce extra horsepower, but the handling is still challenging. Jeremy clai ms that he ha s found a male equivalent versio n of Fifty Shades of Grey, pr esenting a kid's book abou t tracto rs. The new Chevrolet Stingray is a nnou nced. Jame s May turn ed fifty the previous week. Also, the rally team composed of war amputees (previously mentioned in series 17, episode 6) finally comple ted their challenge of finishi ng the 2013 Dakar R ally. Review James r eviews the new Be ntley Continental GT, and notes the new engine and subtle ride characteris tics. Bel ieving that the Bentley, with four wheel d rive system and a bi g, powerful engine, c an handle things worse than a Welsh cou ntryside r oad, James takes the car onto a Wel sh stage of the W orld Rally Cha mpionship, with Kris Meek e behind th e wheel , and James being the c o-driver. Despi te the car having le ss grip, more weight , an el ectronic handbr ake (unsuita ble fo r usa ge on a rally stage) and James not being p roficient at giving p ace notes, t he Bentley was actually faster than one of the full W RC cars. Challenge Jeremy attempts to build a car small er t han the Peel P50, naming his creatio n the P45 . It was based on a quad bike, wit h bodywork fitted, de signed to wr ap around the driver . He then pres ented his idea to t he 'Dragons' in a Dragons' Den st yle f ormat. A ll of the dragons declare th emsel ves out and back in the studio, Richard conclu des that for the P45 to be put in prod uction, J eremy wo uld have t o be dead . 149Se ries 19, Episode 23 February 2013Mick Fle etwood Challenge, Par t 1 In another challenge, t he presenters picked thre e super cars to take on an epic rac e. S ince it was Hammo nd's turn to selec t the chall enge loca tion, the t eam wen t to the Western United S tates. Jeremy selec ted the Lexus LFA, Jam es chose the new Aston Martin Vanquish, and Richard to ok the SR T Viper. After a br ief drive in th e Nevada desert, th e trio headed to Las Ve gas Motor Sp eedw ay, specifically the drag strip, to compete in d rag races organized by the Las Vegas Police D epartment; whom organized it with the t heory that allowing peopl e to drag race, legall y, at a closed circuit, would prev ent street racing. Despit e the h igh performa nce of their cars, the tr io were bea ten by modif ied pro duction cars, and 4W D cars, in each of their drag races. News Jerem y comes up with a solution on how to solve the crisis a ffecting Britain's town ce ntres sack ing all traf fic wardens and removing doubl e yellow lines. The trio then review a Chinese p roduct de signed to stop drow sine ss behind the wheel, bef ore they took a f irst look at the 20 13 Jaguar F-Type. T hey praised its styling, but c riticized it s high p rice tag of £60,000, a s well as its target audience . James me ntions Peugeot Citro en's car intended to run on compressed air; Jeremy attempte d to u se a fire extinguisher to de monstrate, but failed aft er o nly causing h imself to turn slowly around . Challe nge, Part 2. After leavin g Las Vegas , James a nd Ri chard make f un of Jeremy's LFA for lackin g no t only Bluetooth c onnection and iPod connectors, but cup holders , despite being th e most expensive car . They ar e then tasked to head to Willow Springs International Motorsports Park, but they inste ad stop on a grooved road, where e ach car driv es over the groo ves and produces notes. When th ey reach W illow Springs, the y are forced to play an aerial version of Laser Qu est, wher e they would dri ve 5 laps ar ound the track, whilst being chased by two Aermacchi SF.260 armed wi th laser gu ns. In the end, James won the challenge by being hit only 1 7 tim es. Star in a Reaso nably Pric ed Car Fleetwood Mac's Mick Fleetwood drove the Kia Cee'd ar ound th e Test Tra ck with a lap of 145.4. Challenge, Part 3 Departing Willow Springs, the group headed for Los Angele s, Califo rnia. In orde r to do real world testing, Ri chard devised a challen ge to see who could bu rn the best elevens. The thr ee instead ended up drawing a pha llus and left L A. The team then sta yed f or a night in Palm Springs. However, the producers g ave them a final chal lenge. Th e three would drive f rom Palm Springs to t he Mexican border at Calexi co the follo wing morning , and the last to make it to the Mexican bor der would have to travel into the country it self to dr ive the Mastr etta MXT, a Me xican sport s car made fun of by the presenters in an earlie r series, for a later segment on t he sho w. In revenge for taking them to America, Jeremy and James sabotaged Hammond's Viper, causing him to lose 10 minutes in the race. Des pite making a stop for fuel, Jerem y made it to the finish line first, with James in second. Richard th en w alked to the border being th e last pe rson to arrive . At the stu dio, Jame s and Jeremy end by saying that the Viper was aw ful and that the Vanquish and LF A were amazing. 150Serie s 19, Episode 310 Feb ruary 2013Amy Macdonald Review Jere my reviews the T oyota G T86 and the Suba ru BRZ. T he cars are almost identical, but Jeremy prefers the Toy ota GT86. The S tig then comple ted a lap o f the Test Track in 1313. News They discuss the new Suba ru Impreza, which is not coming to UK, and they then talk about the ne w Maserati Q uattroporte. Challenge, Part 1 The pr oducers have reser ved a single ticket t o a football m atch at th e Sa n Siro in Milan, Northe rn Italy. The t rio have a r ace from We mbley Stad ium to the San Si ro. Jeremy drives the Shelby Musta ng GT500 a nd Richa rd an d James travel on public tra nsport. Simila r to the previ ous race to Monte Ca rlo, Richard and James are not allowed t o use any cars , and Jeremy is not all owed to u se any trains. According to Jeremy, since t he last epic race, the trains have become faster and boats have become slow er. Richard and James opened up a big le ad whilst travelling on the Eurostar, an d arrive in Paris w hile Jeremy w as still cros sing the E nglish Channel on a f erry. After rea ching Fra nce, Jeremy disc overs that th e Mustang o nly holds 50 li tres in its fuel tank. After leaving Pari s, Ric hard and James dis cuss what t o do upon arri ving in Milan — as there are two of them but only one ticket. Hundreds of miles be hind, Jeremy en ds part 1 of the c hallenge s tating out loud, I'm gonna los e! St ar in a Reasonably P riced Car Amy Mac donald drove the Kia Cee 'd arou nd th e Test Track in 144.4. During one of her practice runs, Amy a ccidentally destroyed one of t he runway light s, whi ch Jeremy gives to her after revealing th e lap tim e. Challen ge, Part 2 Th e high sp eed TGV slowed down as it app roached t he mounta ins th at surround Northern Italy. Jeremy began to catch up and was nearly neck and neck with the train, until road works at the Mont Blanc Tunnel slow him down. T he train starts to accel erate again and reaches Northern Ita ly ahead of Jere my. Richard and James use a tub e network to get to the streets near the finish line. Jame s mai ntains his opposition to run on t elevision and Rich ard runs off a lone t o find th e finish line, which is a t a bar in the IM Villa Ve uve Cliequot. James the n assembled a bike which he had hidden in on e of h is ba gs and rides t o the bar , only to find that Richard is already there an d has won the race and the ticket to the football match. Moments later, Jeremy arrived and accepted defeat for the first t ime ever in an epic race of all the series. 151Se ries 19, Epi sode 417 February 2013Lewis Hamilton Revie w Jeremy reviews th e Vauxhall Astra VXR, Ford F ocus ST and Renault Megane Renau lt Sport Cup. Th e Sti g did laps of ea ch car, the Focus being the slowe st at 129.6, the Ast ra VXR at 128.3, and the Megane in 127.7. Despite this, Jeremy c hose the Astra VXR as the best ov erall car of the th ree. N ews They di scuss the newest cars, s uch as the A lfa Romeo 4C, the ne xt generation Ford Mu stang would be sold in Great Britain, but the UK version would come w ith a 2.0 EcoBoo st engine, and the impo rtanc e of the handbrake turn in male development. Re view Jeremy tests the all new Kia Cee'd, p utting it throu gh a my riad of strange road tests. Incl uding Matt LeBlanc doing a lap with both the old and new Cee' d, Bruce Willis ( in character as John McC lane) testin g the horn of t he Cee'd, Eric Clapton testing its auxiliary input jack, and Jeremy t esting the Cee'd's self parallel par king feature. Mindin g his w ords, he states th at the MXT was an a mbitious undertaking for the first- time manufacturer, bu t that it h ad its share of flaws. Jeremy's team wins. 152Serie s 19, Episode 524 Febru ary 2013J ames McAvoy C halle nge, Part 1 Jerem y and Richard attempt to design a car targeted at elderly pe ople. Jeremy demonstrates the complexity of mode rn cars ' dshboard. Richard br ings a Fia t Mult ipla and b oth modify it. Jeremy breaks the dashboard and replac es it considering it to be too comp licated for elders. Ric hard asks for t he a irbags s aying that it i s dangero us for the e lderly who are as delicate as c hildren, and that he needs i t for a safety feature. Jeremy makes a speedometer wh ich reads 20 mph at the top spee d, he also uses an o ld design sw itch for rear fog li ght which does nothing. Jeremy installs a pet-cag e and replaces the back seat with hi gh seat chairs and the Fiat badge with a Rover on e. They paint it in beige after observing the sh ade of a hearin g aid. Richard uses water-resist ant fabric as seat co vers, and while stitching hurts his e ye. They comp lete the car and end the p art 1 with Richard wearing heavy bandages over his left e ye. News Volkswagen will launch GTI versio n of the new Golf and GT v ersion of Up will be launc hed. Kia will launch the Pro Cee'd GT. The Mini Paceman is launched, and the trio m ock the f ront end of the car, claiming that i t looks depressing. The trio agree that t he British a re the best drivers. Alfa-R omeo releases photographs of the Gloria, in which the t rio make fun of it' s name. Richard had ar rived late so James and Jeremy had attempted to play tennis wi th cars (which has a lot o f editing). Review James reviews the new Ran ge Rover i n Lond on. T he new c ar is completely redesigned, 400 kg lighter du e to Alumin ium body , has active s uspensi on, new gearbox, minimal ist dashboard and offers better comfort. James th en rac es it agai nst TerraMax at Nevada Aut omotive Test Centre, Nevada. The r ace was to a hill 10 mile ac ross, passin g through ro cky terra in, h illock, mud, river and sand-t racks. TerraMax wa s switched to drone mode during the race to deflate the tyres and take a short-cut. The Range Rover's automatic Terrain Response System is demonst rated . James takes a longer route to ascend th e hill but still wins the race. A t the st udio, the trio con sider the d riverless cars to be not very practical. Star In A Reasonab ly P riced Car James McAvoy drove the Kia Cee'd aroun d the Test T rack w ith a lap of 143.6 despite having less experi ence of driving cars. He drove over gra ssy patch in the last corner but manages to keep the car under contro l. Chall enge, P art 2 Jeremy and Richa rd road-t est their car at Christchurch, Dorset. Th e car has large front bumpers made up of f oam, large rear-v iew mirro rs, squeaking ball under the brake-pedal, large mag nify ing-glass on the dashb oard, sat nav (voiced by Richard Briers ) with only four destinato ns. The ca r has an a rtificial c at on the roof which later fell over on the w ay of Bingo hall. Ri chard later sh ows his system to find the locatio n of p arked car (the car activates a fla re an d then releases a ballo on). Jeremy shows that the radio on ly plays Hor se of the Year Show t heme on a loop, wh ich both later find to be irresis tible to c lap alon g. The name of the car is revealed to be The James. They pick up three elderly ladies from a pensioners' home for r oad-testing an d drive them to a bowl ing club where it is show n that Ri chard fitted th e airbag at the rear for parking assist which inflates the airba g on clo se proximity. Jeremy and Richar d buy foo d for picnic, choosing only British foods. They attach the shopping trolley to Tow hitc h and head for picnic. The roof of th e car leaks as it rains. Jeremy and Richard end up choosi ng a picnic spot on roadside where they find the trolley to be damaged during r eversing and the f ood to be soake d, how ever they ate th e food which was not ru ined. The next day both leav e Christchurch and J eremy shows h is sys tem to prevent the car from being driven on the wrong side of the road, the c ar initially sounds alarm and later the tyres , doors an d other par ts of t he car explode which stops the car and renders it im mobile. T he episode was sh ot in 20 12. Ch allenge, Part 1 Buy used esta te cars for up to £ 1,500 in Britain and report at a small vi llage in rural Uganda. Jeremy arrives in a BMW 528i Tour ing, Richar d in a Subaru Im preza WRX E state and James in a Volvo 8 50R Wagon. The challenge is to find the true source of the ri ver Nil e. They set off a n discov er that e xploring isn't a s difficult as first thought when t hey go on a nice easy drive and find Lake Victoria, of whom the Victorian Expl orers thought w as the s ource of the Nile. H owever th ey ar e then to ld that it is not the actual source of t he Nile and there were t wo other dis puted locations fo r it, one i n Rwanda and one in Burundi. However, Jeremy Clarkson insisted tha t both of these locations we re wrong and decid ed to head we st towards Lake Edward t o see whether t here was a l ink between that lake and Lake Kivu in Rwanda. In their journ ey west, where they visit the Entebb e Airpor t and from there see the Ford Scorpio Estate back-up car. They continue into Kampala, Uganda's Capital City where they get held up in a traffic jam overnight, t he most hurrendous traffic they'd ever se en. Here they stay in a disg usting h otel, after driving through t ea plantat ions in an attempt to discover a lovely teahouse hotel, whic h in the mind of Richard, was bound to found due to tea programm es he'd seen. In M barara they stayed in t he E conomic Lo dge with Jeremy having a bed with faeces on it. They left the ho tel disgusted before Ric hard h as the i dea to make the cars 'hote ls'. James modifies his V olvo by ad ding a library , Richard adds a cooker and Jeremy adds a coff in. The coffin h e uses to put h is clothe s in , he sleeps on Egyptian Cotton. T hey leave for La ke Edwar d, camping overnight there because of its beauty before heading in search of th e ri ver heading fo r La ke Kivu . None of the rivers connect the lake as they al l head east ra ther than south. They give up, leavin g them d isappointed. Then Je remy looks at a map and dis covers the s ource of t he Nile must be on th e other side of Lake Victoria. His reasoning is that the Mediterra nean Sea i s effectively an in land sea and so Gibraltar is the true mouth of the Nile, rathe r than Alex andr ia in Egypt. After disc overing this they decide that the y must drive s traight to the other side of Lake Victor ia to get to the southea st coast in Tanzania near th e Serengeti.
