Re view James reviews the new Bentley Continental GT, and n otes the new engine and subtle ride ch aracteristics. Beli eving that the Bentley, with four wheel drive system and a big, powerful engine, can h andle thin gs worse tha n a Welsh country side roa d, James t akes the c ar onto a Welsh sta ge of the World Rally Cha mpionship, wit h Kris Meeke behind the wheel, and James b eing the co-driver. Challenge Jeremy attempts to build a car smaller than the Peel P50, n aming his creation the P 45. It w as ba sed o n a quad bike, with bodywork fitted, designed to wrap around the driver. He the n presented his i dea to the 'Dragons' in a Dragons' Den style f ormat. Si nce it was Hammond's tu rn to se lect the cha llenge location, the team went to the Western United States. Jeremy selected the Lexus LFA, James chose the new As ton Mart in Vanquis h, a nd Richard took the SRT Viper. After a brief drive in the Nev ada desert, the trio headed to La s Vegas Motor Speedway, specific ally the d rag strip, to compete in drag races organized by the Las Vegas Police De partment ; whom organ ized it wi th the theory that allow ing pe ople to dra g race, legally, at a closed c ircuit, would prevent str eet racing. Despite the high performance of their cars, the tri o were beaten by modified p roduct ion ca rs, and 4WD cars, in eac h of their drag ra ces. News Jeremy comes up w ith a solution on ho w to s olve the crisis affecting Br itain's town centres sacking al l traffic ward ens and removi ng double yellow lines. The tri o then review a Chi nese product designed to stop drowsiness beh ind the wheel, be fore they took a firs t look at the 2013 Jaguar F-Type. They praised its styling, but criticized its high pri ce tag of £60,000, as well as i ts tar get audience. James me ntions Peugeot C itroen's car intended to run on co mpressed air; Jeremy attempted to use a fire e xtinguisher to demon strate , but fai led after only caus ing himself to turn slowly ar ound. In the end, Jame s won the challenge by being h it only 17 times. Star in a Rea sonably Priced Car Fl eetwood Mac's Mick Flee twood drove the Kia Cee'd arou nd the Test Track with a lap of 145.4. Chal lenge, Part 3 Dep arting W illow Sprin gs, the group he aded for Los Angeles, California. In order to do real world te sting, Richard de vised a chal lenge to see who could burn the best elevens. T he three instead ended up dr awing a ph allus and left LA. T he team then stayed fo r a nigh t in Palm Springs. Howev er, the producers gave t hem a final chall enge. The three w ould drive from P alm Springs to the Mexic an borde r at Calexico t he following morn ing, and the la st to make it to the Mexican border would have to travel into the country itself to drive the Mastretta MXT, a Mexican s ports car made fun of by the presenters in an earlier series, for a later segment on the sho w. In revenge fo r taking the m to America, Jeremy and James sabotaged Hammond's Viper, ca using him to lose 10 m inutes in the race. Despite making a stop for fue l, Jeremy mad e it to the finish line first, w ith James in seco nd. Richard then walked to the bor der bein g the last p erson to arrive. At the stu dio, James and Jeremy end by saying that the Viper was awful and that the Van quish and LFA were amazing. 150Ser ies 19, Epi sode 310 February 2013Amy Macdonal d Rev iew Jeremy reviews the Toyota GT86 a nd the Subaru BRZ. The cars are almo st identical, but Jeremy prefers the Toyota GT86. T he Stig then comp leted a lap of the T est T rack in 1313. Ne ws T hey discuss the new Subaru I mpre za, which is not coming to UK, and they the n ta lk about t he new Maserati Qu attropor te. Challe nge, Part 1 The producers have reserved a single ticket to a football match at th e San Siro in Mil an, Norther n Italy. The trio have a race from W embley Stadium to the San S iro. Jeremy d rives the Shelby Mustang GT500 a nd Richard and James t ravel on pu blic tr anspo rt. S imil ar t o the previous race to Monte C arlo, Richard and James a re not allowed to use any cars, and Jerem y is not allowed to use a ny trains. According to Jere my, since the last epic race, the trains have become faster and b oats hav e become sl ower. Ric hard and James open ed u p a big lead whilst travelling on the Eurostar, and arrive in P aris while Jeremy was still crossing the English Channel o n a ferry. After reac hing France, Jeremy discovers that the Mustang only hol ds 50 l itres i n its fuel tank. After leaving P aris, Richa rd and James discus s what to do upon arriving in Milan — as the re ar e two of them but only one ticket. Hu ndreds of miles behind, Je remy end s part 1 of th e challenge stating out lou d, I'm gonna lose! Star in a Reasonably Priced Car A my Macdonald drove the Kia Cee'd around the Test Trac k in 144.4. Durin g one of her practice runs, Amy accident ally d estroy ed one of the runw ay ligh ts, whic h Jeremy gives to her a fter rev ealing the lap time. Challenge, Part 2 The high speed TGV slowed down as it approach ed th e mou ntains that surround Northern Italy. Jeremy began to cat ch up and was nearly neck and neck wi th the train, until road works at t he Mont Blan c Tunnel slow him down. The train starts to accelerate a gain and reaches Norther n Italy ahea d of Jeremy. Richard and Jam es use a tube net work to get to the streets ne ar the f inis h line. James maint ains hi s op position to run on television and Richard ru ns off alone to find th e finish li ne, wh ich is at a bar in the IM Vi lla Veuve Cliequot. James then assembled a bike which h e had hid den in one of his bags and rides to th e bar, onl y to find that Ric hard is alre ady there and has wo n the race and the ticket to the footba ll match. Moments lat er, Jer emy arrived and accepted defeat for the first time ever in an epic race of all th e series. 151Ser ies 19, Episode 417 February 2013Lewis Hamilton Review Jeremy reviews the Vauxhall Ast ra VXR , Ford Focus ST and Renault Mega ne Renault Sport C up. The S tig d id laps of each car , the Focus being the slowest at 129.6, the Astra VXR at 128.3, and the Megane i n 127.7. Despite this, Jeremy cho se th e Astr a VXR as t he best overall car of t he three . News They discuss the new est cars, such as the Alfa Romeo 4C, the next generation Ford Mustang would be sold in Great Britain , but the UK versio n would c ome with a 2.0 EcoBoost engin e, and the importance of the handbrake turn in male development. Review Jeremy tests the all new Kia Cee'd , putting it throug h a myriad o f strang e road tests. Includi ng M att LeBlanc doing a lap with both th e old and ne w Cee 'd, Bruce Willis (in character as John McClane) testing the horn o f the Cee 'd, Eric Cla pton tes ting its a uxiliary inp ut jack, and Jeremy testing the Cee'd's self parall el parking feature. Minding hi s words, he states that the MXT was an ambitious undertaki ng for the first-time manufacture r, but that it had its sha re of flaws. Challen ge Jeremy and James play car rugby using Kia Cee'ds and Kia Sportages at Twick enham Stad ium and Stig in Vau xhall Astra Police car as the referee. Jeremy demo nstrat es the co mplexit y of modern cars' dshboard. R icha rd brings a Fiat Mult ipla and both modify it. Jeremy breaks the dashboard and repla ces it consid ering it to be too com plicate d for elder s. Richard asks for the a irbag s saying that it is dangerous for the elderly who are as delicate as children, a nd that he nee ds it for a safety feature. J eremy mak es a spe edometer which reads 20 mp h at the to p speed, h e also uses an old desig n switch for rear fog light which doe s not hing. Jeremy installs a pet-cage and replaces the back se at with hig h seat chair s and the Fiat badge with a Rover one. They pai nt it in be ige after observing the shade of a heari ng aid. Richard uses water-resistant fa bric as seat covers, and while stitch ing hurts hi s eye. T hey complete the ca r and end the part 1 with Richar d wearing heavy bandages over his left eye. Ne ws Volkswagen will la unch GTI versi on of the new Golf and GT versi on of Up wi ll be launched. Kia will la unch the Pro Cee'd GT. The M ini Paceman is launched, and the t rio mock the f ront end o f the car, claiming that it looks depr essing. The trio agree that the British are the best drivers. Alfa -Romeo releas es pho tographs of the G loria, in which the trio ma ke fun of it's name. Richard had arrived late so James and Jeremy had attempted to play tennis with cars (which ha s a lot of editing). Review James reviews t he ne w Range Rover in London. The new car i s completely redesigned, 40 0 kg lighter due to A luminium body, has acti ve suspension, new gearbox, mi nimalist da shboard and offers bette r comfo rt. James then races it agains t TerraMa x at Nevada Automotive Test Centre, Nevada. The race was to a h ill 10 mile across, passing through rocky terrain, hil lock, mud, river an d sand-tracks. TerraMax was switched to drone m ode d uring the race to deflate the tyres and take a s hort-cut. The Ra nge Rover's auto matic Terrain Response System is demonstrated. James takes a longer rou te to ascend the hil l but still wins the race. At the stud io, the trio consider the driverless cars to be not ve ry practica l. Star In A Reasonab ly Priced Car James McAvoy drove t he K ia Cee'd around the Test T rack with a lap of 143.6 despite havin g less e xperience of driving cars. He drove over grassy patch in the last corner but manages to keep the car under control. Challenge, Pa rt 2 Jeremy and Richard road-test their car at Christchurch, Dorset. The car has large front bumpers made up of foam, large rear-vi ew m irrors, sq ueaking ball under the brake-pedal, large magnifyin g-glass o n the dashboard, sat nav (v oiced by Richard Bri ers) with only four destinatons. The car ha s an arti ficial cat on t he roof which later fe ll over on the way of Bingo hall. Richard later s hows his syst em to f ind t he location of parked car (the car activates a flare and the n releases a balloo n). Jer emy shows that t he radio only plays Hor se o f the Year Show theme o n a loop, which both later fi nd to be irresistibl e to clap along. The name of the car is revealed to be Th e James. They p ick up three elderly l adies fr om a pensi oners' h ome for road-tes ting and drive th em to a bowling club where it is shown that Richard fitted the airba g at the rear for parking assis t which inf lates th e ai rbag on clo se proxim ity. Jere my and Richard buy food for picnic, choosing only British foods. They attach the shopping trolle y to Tow hitch and head for picnic. The roof of t he car l eaks as it r ains. Jeremy a nd Richard end u p choosing a picnic spot on ro adside where the y find t he trolley to be damaged during reversing and the foo d to be soaked, however they ate the food w hich was not r uined. The next day both leave Chris tchurch and Jeremy shows his system to p revent the car f rom being driven on the wrong side of the road, the car ini tially sounds alarm a nd later the tyres, do ors and other parts of the c ar explode which stops the car and renders it immo bile. Jeremy a rrives in a BMW 528i Touring, Ri chard i n a Subaru Imprez a WRX Estate and J ames in a V olvo 850R Wagon. The chal lenge is to find the true source of the river Nile. They set off an discover that exploring is n't as difficult as f irst thought when they go on a nice easy drive and find Lake V ictoria, of whom the Victorian Explorers thought was the source of the Ni le. However the y are then told that it is not th e actual source of the Nile and ther e were two ot her disputed locatio ns for it, one in Rwanda and o ne in Bur undi. However, Jeremy Clarks on ins isted that both of these locations were wrong and decided to head west towa rds Lake Edward to see whether th ere was a link betwee n that lake and L ake Kivu in Rwanda. In their jo urney we st, whe re they visit the Entebbe Airport and from th ere see th e For d Scorpio Estate bac k-up car. They continue into Kampa la, Uganda's Capital City where they get held up in a traffic jam over night , the mos t hurrendous traffic they 'd ever se en. They con tinue on well-maintained highwa ys west finding their trip incredibly easy befo re reaching the t own of Mb arara in the south west of the country, via a stop in Jezza, a vil lage i n Mpigi District. Here they stay in a d isgusting hotel, after driving throu gh tea plantations i n an a ttempt to discover a lovely teahouse hotel, whic h in the mind of Richard, was bound to found du e to tea pro grammes he' d seen. In Mbarara they stayed in the Economi c Lodge wi th Jer emy havi ng a bed w ith faeces on it. They left the hotel disgusted before Ri chard has the idea to make the cars 'hotel s'. James mod ifies his Volvo by adding a library, Richar d adds a coo ker and Jeremy a dds a coffin. The coffin he uses to put his clothe s in, h e sleeps on Egyptian Cott on. They l eave for L ake Edward, camping overnight there because of its beau ty before heading in search of t he river heading for Lake Kivu. None of the river s connect the lake as they all head east rather than sou th. They give up, leaving th em dis appointed. Then Jeremy looks at a map and discovers the source of the Nile must be on the other side of Lak e Victoria. His reasoning is that the Mediterranean Sea is e ffectively an inland s ea a nd so Gibr alta r is the true mouth of the Nile, rathe r than Ale xand ria in Egypt. Af ter discovering this they decide that th ey must drive straight to the other side of Lake Victoria to get to the sout heast coast in Tan zani a near the Se rengeti .
