148Series 19, Episode 127 January 2013Damian Lewis Review Richard reviews the Pagani Huayra, the latest s upercar from the Italian manufa cturer. The car is capable o f sav age acceleration, with a lot o f attention plac ed into the bodywork, i nter ior and ut ilizing cutt ing e dge technol ogy. Despi te the massive twin-turbo eng ine and ho rsepower , thanks to its sophisticated aerodyn amic p ackage, the car can easil y be driven hard without the risk of spin ning. The Huayra also set the fast est time o n the Top Gear Test Track in the hands of The Stig, 1 13.8, bea ting the previous recor d, set by the Ariel Atom V8. New s The Dacia Sandero is now on sale in the UK. The Mercedes-Be nz S LS AMG Black has been up dated to pro duce extra hors epow er, but the handl ing is stil l challengi ng. Jeremy claims t hat he has fou nd a m ale equi valent versi on of Fifty Shade s of Grey, presenting a kid's book abou t tract ors. The ne w Chevrole t Stingray is announced. James May turned fifty the previous wee k. Also, the rally team composed of war a mputee s (p reviously mentioned in series 17, epis ode 6) fin ally completed their c hallenge of finishing the 2013 Dakar R ally. Review James reviews the n ew Bentley Continental GT, and notes the new e ngine and subtle r ide characteristics. Believing that the Bentley, with four wheel drive system and a big, powerful engine, can handle thing s worse than a Welsh countryside road, James takes the car onto a Wel sh st age of the World Rally Cham pionship, w ith Kris Meeke b ehind the w heel , and James being t he co-driver. Des pite the car ha ving le ss grip, more weig ht, a n electronic handbrake (unsuitab le for usage on a rally stage ) and Jam es not be ing profic ient at giving pace no tes, the B entley was actu ally faster than one of the full WRC cars. Star In A Reasonably Priced Car Damian Lewis takes his turn in the car, and drif ts the Kia Cee'd around th e snow-coated te st track and crosses the fini sh line sideways, se tting the sl owest ever time of 209.1. Jeremy cheers Damian up by making a separate boa rd for sn ow (he justs put the time underneath and to the side of th e faste st lap time on that board) and say s th at he is the fastest driver ever on their snow board. C hallenge Jeremy att empts to build a car smaller tha n the Peel P50, naming hi s cre ation the P45. It was based o n a quad bike, with bodywork fitted, designed to wr ap around the drive r. H e then presente d his idea to the 'Drag ons' in a Dragons' Den style f ormat. All of the dra gons declare themselves out and back in the studio, Richard concludes that for the P45 to be put in productio n, Jeremy would have to be dead. 149Series 19, E pisode 23 February 2013Mick Fl eetwood Challen ge, Pa rt 1 In anot her challeng e, the presenters pick ed three super cars to take on a n epic r ace. Sin ce it was Hammond's tu rn to select the challenge loc ation, the team went to the Western United St ates. J eremy selected the Lexus LFA, James chose the new Aston Martin Vanquish, and Ric hard took the SRT V iper . After a brie f drive in the Nevada d esert, the trio headed to L as Vegas Motor Speedway, specifically t he drag strip, to compe te in drag races organi zed by the Las Vegas Police Dep artment; whom organized it with the theo ry that allowin g people to dr ag race, l egally , at a c losed circui t, would prevent st reet racing. Despite t he hi gh perform ance of t heir cars, the trio were beat en by mod ified produ ction cars, and 4WD cars, i n each of their drag races. News Jeremy comes up with a s olution on ho w to sol ve the crisis affecting Britain's town centres sacking all tr affic wardens and removing double yellow l ines. The trio then rev iew a Chinese pr oduct designed to stop drowsines s behind the wheel, before th ey took a first look at the 2013 Jaguar F-Ty pe. They praised its styling, but criticized its high p rice tag o f £60 ,000, a s well as its targ et audience. James menti ons Peugeot Citroen's c ar inten ded to r un on com pressed a ir; Jeremy att empted to use a f ire extinguisher to de monstrate, but f ailed after only causing hi mself to turn slowl y around. Challenge, Part 2. After leaving Las Vegas , Jam es and Richard make fun of Jeremy's LFA for lacking not only Bluetooth connect ion and iPod con nectors, bu t cup holders, despite being the most expens ive ca r. They are then ta sked to h ead to Willow Springs Internatio nal Motorsports Park, but they ins tead stop on a grooved road , where each car dri ves over the groov es and pro duces not es. When they r each Willow Sprin gs, they are f orced to play an aerial version of Las er Quest, where th ey would dri ve 5 laps a round the tra ck, whilst bei ng chased by two Aermacc hi SF .260 armed with la ser guns. In th e end, James won the challenge by being hit only 17 time s. Star in a Reas onab ly Pr iced Car Fl eetwood M ac's Mick Fleetwood drove the Kia Cee'd aroun d the Test Track with a lap o f 145.4. Ch allenge, Part 3 Depart ing Wi llow Springs, the group headed for Los Angeles, California. In order to do real worl d testing, Rich ard devise d a challenge to see who cou ld burn th e best elev ens. The t hree instea d ended up drawing a phallus and lef t LA. The team the n stayed for a night in Palm Spring s. However, the produce rs gave them a final ch allenge. The three would dr ive from Palm Springs to the Mex ican border at Cale xico the fo llowing mo rning, and the las t to make it to the Mexican border w ould have to t ravel into the count ry it self to driv e the Mastretta MXT , a Mexican sports ca r ma de fun of by the p resenters in an earlier series, for a later segme nt on the show. I n reve nge fo r taking them to A merica, Jeremy and James sabotaged Hammo nd's V iper , causing him to lose 10 minutes in the race. Despite m aking a s top for fuel , Jeremy made it to the fini sh line f irst, with Jame s in second. Rich ard then walked to the bor der being the last pe rson to arrive. At the st udio, James and Jer emy end by saying that the Viper was awful and that the Vanqui sh and L FA were amazing. 150Se ries 19, Episode 310 February 2013Amy Macdonal d Review Je remy reviews th e Toy ota GT86 and the Subaru BRZ. The cars are almost identi cal, but Jeremy pref ers the Toyota GT86. T he Stig then completed a lap of the Test T rack in 1313. Ne ws They discuss the new Su baru I mpreza, wh ich is not comin g to UK, and they then t alk ab out the new Maserati Quattroporte. C hallenge, Part 1 Th e producers have reserved a single ticket to a footba ll match a t the San Siro in Milan, Northern Ita ly. The trio have a race from We mbley S tadium to the San Siro. J eremy drives the Shelby Mustang GT500 an d Ri chard and James t rave l on public transpo rt. Similar t o the previous race to Monte C arlo, Ric hard and James are no t al lowed to use any cars, a nd Jerem y is not allowed to use any trains. Ac cording to Jeremy, sin ce the last epi c race , the t rains have become faster and boa ts h ave bec ome s lower. Richa rd and Jam es opened up a big lead wh ilst travelling o n the Eur ostar, and arrive in Paris while Jeremy was still crossing the English Channel on a ferry. After reaching France, Jerem y discovers that the Musta ng only holds 5 0 litres in its fue l tank. A fter leaving Pari s, Ric hard and James dis cuss what to d o upon arriving in Milan — as there are two o f them b ut only one tic ket. Hundre ds of miles behind, Je remy ends part 1 of the challenge stati ng out l oud, I' m gonna lose ! Star in a Reasonably Priced Car Amy Macd onald drove the Kia Cee'd aroun d the Test T rack in 144.4. During one of her practice runs, Amy accident ally destroyed one of t he runway lights, which Jeremy gives to h er afte r revealin g the lap time. Challenge, Part 2 The h igh sp eed TGV slow ed down as it approached the mount ains tha t surr ound Northe rn Italy. Jeremy began to catch up and was nearly neck and neck with the train , until road works at the Mont Blanc Tunnel sl ow him down. The train sta rts to accelerate ag ain and r eaches Northern Italy ahead of Jeremy. Richard and James use a tube network to get to the streets near the finish line. James m aintains his opposition to r un on television and Richard runs of f alone to find the finish line, which i s at a ba r in the IM Villa Veuve Cliequot. James then as sembled a bi ke which he had hidden in one of his b ags and rides to the bar, only to find that Richard is alread y there and has won th e race and the ticket t o the football m atch. Moments later, Jeremy arri ved and a ccepted defeat for the f irst time ever in an epic race of all the series. 151 Series 19, Episode 4 17 Febr uary 201 3Lewis Hami lton Revi ew Jeremy r eviews the Vauxhal l Astra VXR, Ford Focus ST and Renault Mega ne Re nault Sport Cup. The Stig did laps of ea ch car, the Focus b eing t he slowest at 129.6, the Astra VXR at 128.3, and the Megane in 127.7. D espite this, Jeremy chos e the Astra VXR as the best overall car of t he three. News T hey discus s the newest cars , su ch as the Alfa R omeo 4C, the n ext generation Ford Mustang would be sold in Great Britain, but th e UK version would come with a 2.0 EcoBoost en gine, a nd the importance of the ha ndbrake turn in male development. Review Jeremy tests t he all new Kia Cee'd, putting i t through a myriad of s trange roa d tests . Including Matt LeBlanc doing a lap with both the old and new Cee'd, Bruce W illis (in charact er as Joh n McClane) testing the horn of the Cee'd, Eric Clapton testing it s au xiliary input jack , and Jer emy testing the Cee'd's self parallel parking f eature. Star in a Reasonab ly Priced Car Lewis Hamilton opens up about his move fro m McLaren t o Mercedes AMG and take s the old Suzuki Liana around the Test Track, setti ng the fastest F1 time, a 142.9. Review As pu nishment for losing t he pr evious race, Richar d is forc ed to review the Mastretta MXT in Mexico. Minding his words, he states that the MXT was an ambitious u ndertaking for the first-ti me ma nufactu rer, but that it had its s hare o f fl aws. Challenge Jeremy and Ja mes play car rugby using Kia Cee'ds and Kia Sport ages at Twickenham Stad ium and S tig in Vauxhall Astra Po lice car as the referee. Je remy's tea m wins. 152Series 19, Episode 52 4 February 2013James McAvoy Cha lleng e, Part 1 Jerem y and Richard attempt to design a ca r targ eted at e lderly people. Jeremy demonstrates the compl exity of modern cars' dshboard. Richa rd brings a Fiat Multipla and both modify it . Jeremy breaks t he dashbo ard a nd replac es it consi dering it to be too com plicated for elders. Richard asks for the airbags saying that it is d angerous for the elderly who are as delic ate as ch ildren, and that he needs it for a safety fe ature . Jeremy makes a speedomet er which rea ds 20 mph at the to p speed, he al so uses an old desi gn s witch for rea r fog light which do es no thing. Jere my installs a pe t-cage and replaces the back seat with high sea t chairs and the Fiat bad ge with a Rover one. They paint it i n bei ge after observing the shade of a hear ing aid. Richa rd uses water-resistant fabric as seat covers, and w hile sti tching hurts his eye. Th ey complet e the car and end the part 1 with Richard wea ring heavy bandage s over his left eye. News Volksw agen will l aunch GT I vers ion of the n ew Golf and GT ver sion of Up will be launched. Kia will launch the Pro Cee'd GT. The Mini Paceman i s launched, and the trio mock the front end of the ca r, claimin g that it l ooks depress ing. The trio agr ee tha t the British are the b est dr ivers . Alfa-Romeo releases photographs of the Gloria , in whi ch the trio make fun of it's name. Richard had arri ved late so Jam es and Jeremy had attempted to play tennis with cars (which has a lot of editing). Review Jam es reviews the ne w Range Rover in London. The new car is completely redes igned, 400 kg lighter due to Aluminium body, has active suspensi on, ne w gearbox, minimalist dashboard and offe rs better comfort. James then races it against TerraMax a t Nevada A utomotive Test Centr e, Nevada. T he race wa s to a hi ll 1 0 mile across, passing through rocky terrain, hillock , mud, r iver and sand-track s. T erraMax wa s switched to drone mode dur ing the race to deflate the tyres and tak e a short-cut. The Range Rover's automatic Terrain Response System is demonstrate d. J ames takes a longer route to ascen d the hill b ut sti ll wins the r ace. At the studio, the trio consider the driverless cars to be n ot very pract ical. He drove over grassy patch in the last corner but manages to keep the car under cont rol. Challenge, Pa rt 2 Jeremy and Richard road-test their car at Christchurch, D orset. Th e car has large fro nt bumpers made up of foa m, larg e rear-v iew mi rrors, squeaking ball under the brake-pedal, large magnifying-gl ass on the dashboard, sat nav (voiced by Richard Brie rs) with onl y four destinatons. The car has an artifi cial cat on the roof which later fell over on the way of Bingo hall. Richard later shows his system to f ind the location of parked car (the ca r activates a fl are and th en releases a balloon). Jerem y sho ws th at the ra dio on ly plays Horse of the Year Show th eme o n a loop, wh ich both later find to be ir resistible t o clap along. The name of the car is revealed to be The James. T hey pick up th ree elderl y ladies from a pensioners' home f or road-tes ting and dri ve them to a bowling club whe re it is s hown that Rich ard fitted the a irbag at the rear for parki ng assist which inflates th e airbag on c lose proximity. Jeremy and Richard buy food for picnic, choosing only British foods. They attach the shoppi ng trolley to Tow hitch and head fo r picnic. The roof of the car leaks a s it rains . Jeremy and Richard end up choosing a picnic spot on roads ide wher e they fin d the trolley to be dama ged du ring reversing and the food to be soaked, however th ey at e the f ood wh ich was not ruin ed. The next day both leave Christchurch and Jeremy shows his sy stem to prevent th e car fro m being driven o n the wrong side of the ro ad, the car initially so unds alarm and later t he tyr es, doors and other parts of the c ar explode which stops the car and renders it immobile. At the studio, James c onsiders the heater t o be compl icated, the tr io thank Ric hard B riers and announce the Af rica speci al. 153Series 19, Episode 63 March 2013No Guest Fir st of th e two-epi sode Africa Spe cial, taking place in Africa. The episode was sh ot in 2012. Challen ge, Part 1 Buy us ed e state ca rs for up to £1,500 in Britain and report at a small vi llage in rural Uganda. Jeremy arrives in a BMW 528i T ouri ng, Richard in a Sub aru Imp reza WRX Estate and Jame s in a Volvo 850R Wagon. The challenge is to find the true sour ce of the river Nile . They set off an discover that exploring i sn't as diffic ult as first thought when they go on a n ice easy drive and find Lake Victoria, of whom the Victoria n Explorers thought was the sou rce of the Nil e. However they are then to ld t hat it is not the actual source of the Nile and there were two other disputed locations for it, one in Rwanda and one in Burundi. Ho wever, Jerem y Clarkson insisted that bot h of these locations were wrong and dec ided to head west towards Lake Edward to see whether there was a l ink between that lake and Lake Kivu in Rwanda. In their journe y west, wh ere they v isit the Entebbe Ai rport and from there see th e For d Scorpio Estate back-u p car. They continue into Kampala, Uganda's Cap ital City where they get held up in a traffic jam ov ernight, the most h urrend ous traf fic they 'd ever seen. They contin ue o n well-maint ained highways west finding thei r trip i ncredibly ea sy befor e reaching the town of Mbarara in the south west of the country, via a stop in Jezza, a village in Mpigi District . Her e they stay in a disgusting hotel, after dri ving through t ea plant ations in a n attempt to d iscover a lo vely teahouse hotel, which in the mi nd of Rich ard, was bound to found d ue to tea p rogrammes he'd seen. I n Mbarara they stayed in the Economic Lodge with Jeremy having a bed with faeces on it. They left the ho tel disgusted before Ric hard has the idea to make the ca rs 'hotel s'. Jame s modifies his Volvo b y adding a lib rary, Richard adds a c ooker and Jeremy adds a c offin. The coffin he uses to put his clothes i n, he sleeps on Egyptian C otton. They l eave for Lake E dward, ca mping o vernigh t there because of its be auty before heading in search of the river headi ng for Lak e Kivu. None of th e rivers connect th e lake as they all head east rather than south . They give up, leaving them disappointed. Then Jerem y looks at a map and discovers th e source of the Nile must be on th e other s ide of Lake Victoria. His reasoning is that t he Medi terranean S ea is effec tively an inland sea and so Gibraltar is the true mouth of the Nile, rather t han Alexandria in Egypt. After discovering this they decide that the y must dri ve strai ght t o the other side of Lake Victoria to get to th e southeast coast in Tanzania near the Sere ngeti.
