After a bri ef drive in the Nevada desert, the tri o headed to Las Vegas Motor Speedway, speci fically the drag strip, to compete i n drag ra ces o rganized by the Las V egas Police Department; whom organized it wit h the theo ry that allowing people to drag race, le gally, at a closed c ircuit, would prev ent street racing. D espite the h igh p erformanc e of their cars, th e trio wer e beaten by modified production cars , and 4WD cars, in each of their drag races. News Jer emy comes up with a sol ution on how to sol ve the cri sis affectin g Britai n's town ce ntres sac king all traffic wardens and removin g doubl e yellow lines. Chall enge, Part 3 Departing W illow Springs, t he group headed for Los An geles, California. In or der to do real world testing, Richard devised a c hallenge to se e who could burn the best el evens. The three instead ended up dr awing a phallus and lef t LA. The team then stayed for a night in Palm Springs. However, the pro ducers gave them a final challenge. The th ree would dr ive from Palm Springs to the Mexican border at Calexico the followi ng mornin g, and t he l ast to make it to the Mexic an border would have to travel into t he cou ntry itself to driv e the Mastr etta MX T, a Mexic an sports car made fun of by the presenters in an ear lier series , fo r a l ater segment on the sho w. In revenge fo r tak ing them to Americ a, Jerem y and James sabo taged Hammond's Viper, causing him to lose 10 minutes in the race. Cha llenge, Part 1 The prod ucers have reserv ed a single t icket to a football ma tch at the San Siro in Milan, Northern Italy. The trio have a race from Wembley Stadium to the S an Siro. Jer emy drives the S helby Must ang GT500 and Richard and Jam es trav el on public transpor t. Similar to the previous race t o Monte Ca rlo, Richard a nd Jam es are not allowe d to use any cars, and J eremy is not all owed to u se any trains. Accordi ng to Jeremy, since the last e pic race, the tr ains have become faster and boats have become slower. Richard and Jame s opened up a b ig lead whilst travell ing on the Eur ostar, and arrive in Paris while Jeremy was still crossin g the Engl ish Channel on a ferry. Afte r re aching France, Je remy discovers that the Mustang only ho lds 50 litres in its fuel tank. Aft er leaving Paris, Ric hard and James discus s what to do upon arriv ing in Milan — as there are t wo of them but only one ticket. Hundreds of miles behind, Jerem y ends pa rt 1 of the challenge stating out loud, I'm gonna lose! Star in a R easonably P riced Car A my Macdo nald drove the Kia Cee'd around the Test Track in 144.4. During one of her practice runs, Amy accidentally destroyed o ne of the runw ay lights, which Jeremy gives to her after rev ealing t he lap t ime. Chall enge, Part 2 The high speed TGV slowed down as it approached th e mountains that surround Norther n Italy. Jeremy began to catch up and was nearly neck an d nec k wit h the trai n, until road works at the Mont Blanc Tunnel slow him d own. The train s tart s to accelerate again and re ache s Northern Italy ahead of Jeremy . Richard and James use a tube ne twork to g et to the stree ts nea r the f inish line. James maintains h is opposition to ru n on televi sion and Richard runs off alone to find the finish line, which is at a ba r in the IM Villa Veuv e Cliequ ot. Jame s then asse mbled a bike which he had hid den in one o f his bags and rides t o the bar , only to find that Richard is alre ady there and has won the race and the ticket to the football match. Jeremy demonstra tes the co mplexity of modern cars ' dshboard. Richard brin gs a Fiat Multipla and both modify it. Jeremy breaks the dashboard and rep laces it c onsideri ng it to be too com plicated fo r elders . Richard asks for the air bags saying that it is dangerous for the elde rly who ar e as delicate as children , and that he needs it for a safety feature. Jeremy makes a speed ometer which re ads 20 mph at the to p spee d, he also uses an old design switch for rear fog light w hich does nothi ng. Jeremy install s a pet- cage and replac es the back seat with high seat ch airs and the Fiat badge with a Rover one. They paint it in beig e after observing the shade o f a hea ring aid. Richard uses water-resistant fabric as seat cover s, a nd while stitching hurts his eye. They c omplet e the car and end the part 1 with R ichard wearing heavy banda ges ove r hi s left eye . News Volkswagen will launch GTI versio n of the new Go lf and GT version of U p will be launched. Kia will laun ch the P ro Cee 'd GT. The Mini Paceman is launched, and the trio mock the front end o f the car , claiming that it l ooks depre ssing. The t rio agree that the Britis h are the best drivers. A lfa-Romeo releases p hotographs of t he Gloria, in whi ch the trio make fun of it's n ame. Richard had arrived late so Jam es and Je remy had att empted to play tennis with cars ( which h as a lot of editing). Review James revi ews the new Range Rove r in London. Th e new car is completely redesigned, 400 kg lighter due t o Aluminium body , has active suspe nsion, new gearbox, minimalist dashboard and offers bett er comfort. J ames then races it again st TerraMax at Nevada Automotive Test Centre , Nev ada. Th e race was to a h ill 10 mile ac ross, passing t hrough r ocky te rrain, hill ock, mud, r iver an d sand-tracks. T erraMax was switched to drone mode duri ng the race to deflate the tyres and take a s hort-cut. The Range Rover's aut omatic Terrain Respons e System i s demonstr ated. James takes a lon ger route to ascend the h ill but still wins the race. At the studio, the trio con sider the dr iverle ss cars to be not very practic al. T he car ha s large fron t bumpers made up of foa m, large rea r-vie w mirrors, squeakin g ball under the brake-pedal , large magnifying-glass on the dashboard, sat nav (voiced by Richard Briers) with only f our dest inatons. The car has an artifi cial cat on the roof which lat er fell over on the wa y of Bingo hall. Ri chard later sho ws hi s system to find the lo cation of parked car (th e car act ivates a flare and then releases a balloon) . Jere my shows that the radio only plays Horse of th e Year Show theme on a loop, wh ich both lat er find to be irresistible to clap alon g. The na me of the car is revealed to be The J ames. They pick u p three elder ly ladies from a pensioners ' home f or road-testing and drive them to a bow ling club w here it is shown that Ric hard fitted the airb ag at the rear for park ing assist which i nflates the airb ag on close proximity. Jeremy and Richard buy food for pic nic, choosing onl y British foods. They att ach t he shopp ing trolle y to Tow hitch and he ad for picnic. The roof of the car leaks as it r ains. Jerem y and Richard end up choosi ng a picnic spot on roa dside where they find the trolley to be damaged duri ng revers ing and t he food to be soaked, however they ate the f ood which was not ruined. The next day both leave Chris tchurch and Jeremy show s his system to pr event the car from being driven on the wrong side of the road, the car initi ally sounds alarm and later t he t yres, doors and o ther part s of the ca r explode which stops the c ar and rende rs i t immobile. They set off an d isco ver tha t exploring isn't a s difficult as first thought when they go on a nice easy drive and find L ake Victoria, of whom the Victoria n Explo rers thought was the source of the Nile. Howe ver they are th en told that it is not t he actual source of the Nile and there were two other disputed loc ations for i t, on e in Rw anda and on e in Burundi. However, Jeremy Clarkso n insisted t hat both of these locations wer e wrong and decided to head west towards Lake Edward to see whethe r there was a l ink betwe en that lake and L ake Kivu in Rwanda. In their jou rney west, where they vis it the Entebbe Airport and from there see the F ord Scorpio Estate back-up ca r. They continue in to Kampala, Uga nda's Capi tal City where they get hel d up in a traffi c jam overnight, the most hurrendous traf fic they 'd ever seen. T hey continu e on well-m aintained highways west finding their tr ip incredi bly easy before r each ing the town of Mbarar a in the southwe st of the count ry, via a stop in Je zza, a village in Mpigi D istrict. Here they stay in a disgusting hotel , after d riving through tea pl antations in an attempt to discover a l ovely teahouse hotel, which in the mind of Richard, wa s bound t o found due to tea pro grammes he'd seen . In Mb arara they stayed in the Ec onomic Lodge with Jeremy ha ving a bed with faeces on it. They left the hotel disgust ed before Richard has the idea to m ake the cars 'h otels'. Jame s modifies his Volv o by addi ng a library, Richard adds a cooker a nd Jeremy adds a cof fin. The cof fin he uses to put h is clothe s in, he sleeps on Egyptian Cotton. They leave f or L ake Edwar d, camping overnigh t there beca use of its beauty bef ore heading in search of the riv er heading for Lake Kivu. None of the rive rs connect the lake as they all head eas t rather th an south. T hey give up, leaving them disap pointed. Then Jeremy looks at a map and discovers the source of the Nile must be on t he oth er si de of Lake Vi ctoria. His reasoning is tha t the Medi terranean Sea is effec tively an inland sea and s o Gibraltar is t he tr ue mouth of the Nil e, rath er than Alex andria in Egypt. After disc overing this they decide that they must drive stra ight to the other si de of Lake V ictoria t o get to the southeast coast in Tanzania near the Serengeti.
