Jeremy claims that he has found a male equivalent versio n of Fifty Shades of Grey, presenting a ki d's book about tractors. The new Chevrolet Stingray is announced. James May turn ed fifty the previous week . Also, the rally team composed of war ampu tees (prev iously menti oned in series 17, ep isode 6) f inally completed their ch allenge of finishing the 20 13 Dakar Rally. R eview James reviews the new Bentley Continental GT, and notes th e new engine and subtle ride cha racteristi cs. Believing that the Ben tley, with four wheel dr ive system and a big, p owerf ul engine , can handl e th ings worse than a Welsh countryside road, James takes the car onto a Welsh stage of the World Rally Championship , with Kris Meeke behind the wheel, and James being the co- driver. Des pite the car having less grip, more weig ht, an electro nic ha ndbrake (un suitable fo r usage on a rally stage) and James not being proficient at giving pace notes, the Ben tley was actually fas ter th an one o f the full WRC c ars. Challenge J eremy attempts to bu ild a car smaller tha n the Peel P50, naming hi s creation the P45. It was based on a quad bike, with bodywork fitted, designed to wrap around the driver. He then presented his id ea to the 'Dragons ' in a Dragons' Den style format. All o f the dragons declare themselves ou t and b ack in the studio, Rich ard concludes tha t for the P45 to be put in pr oductio n, Jere my would have to be dead. 149Ser ies 19, Episode 23 February 2013Mi ck Fleetwood Challenge, Pa rt 1 In ano ther challenge, the presenters pi cked three super ca rs to take on an ep ic race. Since it was Hammond's turn to select the c hall enge loca tion, the te am went to the W estern United States. Jerem y selecte d the Lexus LFA, James c hose the new Aston Martin Vanquish, and Ri chard took the SRT Viper. After a brief drive in the Ne vada desert, the tr io headed to Las Vegas Motor Speedway, specifically th e drag strip, t o comp ete in drag race s orga nized by the Las Vegas Police Depa rtment ; whom organ ized it with the theory that allowing people to dra g race, leg ally, at a close d circuit, would prevent street racing. De spite the high per formance of thei r ca rs, the trio were beaten by mo dified production cars, and 4WD cars, in each of the ir drag races. News Jeremy comes up with a solution on how to solve the crisi s affecting Britain 's town cent res sacking all traffic wardens and removi ng double yellow lines. The trio then review a Chinese product designed to stop dro wsiness behind the wheel, before they took a first look at the 2013 Jaguar F-Type. They p raised its styling, but criticized its high price tag of £60,000, as well as its target audience. James mentions Peugeot Citroen's car intended to ru n on compressed air; Jeremy attempted to use a fire extinguisher to demo nstrate, but failed after only causi ng himse lf to turn s lowly ar ound. Challe nge, Part 2. Af ter leaving Las Veg as, James and Richard make fun of J eremy's LF A for lacking not only Bluetooth connection a nd iPod c onnectors, but cup holde rs, despite b eing the most expensive car. The y are then tasked to head to Willow Sprin gs International Mo torsports Pa rk, but they inst ead stop on a grooved road, where each car drives over t he grooves and produces notes . When they reach Willow Sprin gs, they are forc ed to play an aerial version of L aser Quest, where they woul d drive 5 laps aroun d the tra ck, whils t being chased by two Aermacc hi SF.260 armed with laser guns. In the end, James wo n th e challenge by being hi t only 17 times. Star i n a Reasonably Pric ed Car Fleet wood Mac's Mick Fleet wood drove the Ki a Cee'd around the Test Track with a lap of 14 5.4. Chal leng e, Part 3 D eparting Willow Springs, the gr oup headed for Los Angel es, California. In order to d o real world testing, Richard devised a challe nge to se e who could burn the best elevens. Th e three ins tead ended up d rawin g a phallu s and left LA. The team then stayed for a night in Palm Sp rings. However, the produc ers gav e them a final cha llenge. The three woul d drive from Palm Springs to the Mexican border at Calexico the following m orning, and the last to m ake it to the Mexican bor der would have to travel into the country itself to drive the Mastretta MXT, a Mexican sports car made fun of by the pre senter s in a n earlier seri es, for a later segment on the show. In reven ge for takin g them to America, Jeremy and Jam es sabo taged Hammond's Viper, causing him to lose 10 minute s in the race. Despite making a stop for fuel, Jerem y made it to the finish line first, with James in second. Richard then walked to the bo rder being the last person to arrive. At the studi o, James and Jeremy end by saying t hat t he Vipe r was awful and that the Van quish and LFA were amazing. 150Series 19, Episode 3 10 February 2 013Amy Macdon ald R eview Jeremy reviews the Toyo ta GT86 and the Subaru BRZ . Th e cars are almost id entical, but Jeremy p refers the T oyota GT86 . The Stig then com pleted a lap of the Test Track in 1313. N ews They discuss the new Subaru Impreza, which is no t coming to UK, and they t hen talk about the new Mase rati Quattrop orte. Cha lleng e, Part 1 The producers have reserved a s ingle ticket to a f ootball ma tch at the San Siro in M ilan, Nor thern Italy. The trio have a rac e from Wembley Stad ium to the San S iro. Jeremy driv es the Shelby Mustan g GT500 a nd Richard and James travel on public transport. Similar to the previous race to Mont e Carlo, Richard and James are not allowed to u se any cars, and Jeremy is not allowed to use any trains. According to Jeremy, since the last epic race, the trains h ave become faster and boa ts h ave become slower. R ichard and James open ed up a b ig lea d whilst t rave lling on th e Eurostar, and arrive in Paris whi le Jeremy was still crossing t he English Channel on a ferry. After reaching Franc e, Jeremy d iscovers that the M ustang only holds 50 litres in its fuel tank. After leaving Paris , Richard and James dis cuss wha t to do upon arriving i n Milan — as there are two of them but only on e ticket. Hundreds of mile s behin d, Jer emy ends part 1 of the chall enge sta ting out loud , I' m gonna lo se! Star in a Re asonably Pri ced Car Amy Macd onald drove the Kia Cee'd ar ound the Test T rack in 144.4. During on e of her practice runs, Amy accide ntally destroy ed one of the runway lig hts, which Jeremy gives to her af ter revealing the lap tim e. Challenge, P art 2 The hi gh speed T GV slowed down as it ap proa ched the mo untains that su rround Northern I taly. Jeremy b egan to catch u p and w as nearly neck and neck with the tra in, until roa d works at the Mont Blanc Tunnel slow him d own. The train st arts to accel erate aga in and re aches Northern Italy ahead of Jer emy. Richard and James use a tube network to g et to the streets near the finish li ne. James mai ntains his opp osition to run on te levision and Richa rd runs off alone to find the finish line, which is at a bar in the IM Villa Veuve Cliequo t. Ja mes then as sembled a bike which he had hidden i n one of his bags and rides to the ba r, only to find that Richard is already there and has won the race and the ticket to the fo otball matc h. Mo ments later , Jere my arr ived and a ccepted defeat for the first time ever in an epic race of all t he series. 151Ser ies 19, Episode 417 February 2013Lewis Ha milton R eview Jeremy reviews the Vauxhall As tra VXR, Ford Fo cus ST and Renaul t Megane Rena ult Spo rt Cup. The Stig did laps of each car, the Fo cus being the slow est at 129.6, the Astra VXR at 12 8.3, and the Megane in 127. 7. Despite this, Jeremy chose the Astra VXR a s the best overall car of the three. News Th ey discuss the newest cars , such as the Alfa Romeo 4C, the next generation Ford M ustang would be sol d in Great B ritain, b ut the UK v ersion wou ld come with a 2.0 EcoBoos t engine, and the importance of the handbrake turn in mal e developme nt. R eview J eremy tests th e al l new Kia C ee'd, putting it through a myr iad of str ange road tests. Including Matt LeBlanc doing a lap with both the old and new Cee'd, Bruce Wil lis (in character as John McClane) t esti ng the horn of the Cee'd, Eri c Clapton testi ng it s auxi liary input jack, and Jer emy testing the Ce e'd's self parallel parking featu re. Jeremy d emonstrates the complexity of modern cars' dshboard. Richard b rings a Fiat Multipla and both mod ify it. Jere my bre aks the dashbo ard and rep laces it considerin g it to be too complicated for elders. Ri chard asks for t he airbags saying that it is dangerous for the elderly who are as delicate a s child ren, and that he needs it for a safety feature. Jer emy makes a speedo meter which reads 20 mph at the top s peed, he also uses an old desig n switch for re ar fo g light wh ich does nothin g. Jeremy installs a pe t-cage an d replaces t he back seat with hig h seat cha irs and th e Fiat badg e with a Rov er one. T hey paint it in beige after obs erving the shade of a hearing ai d. Richard uses w ater-r esistant fabric as seat covers, and while stitchin g hurts his ey e. The y complete t he c ar and end the part 1 with Richar d wear ing heavy b andages over his left ey e. News Volkswag en will launch GTI version of the ne w Go lf and GT ver sion of Up will b e lau nched. Kia will launch the Pro C ee'd GT. The Mini Paceman is launched, and the trio mo ck the fr ont end of the car, claimi ng that it looks dep ressing. The trio agree that the British are the be st drivers. Alf a-Romeo releases photograph s of the Gloria, in wh ich the trio make fun of it 's n ame. Richard had arrived lat e so James and Jerem y had attempted to play tenni s with cars (whi ch has a lot of editing ). Review Jame s reviews t he n ew Ran ge Rover in London. The new c ar is completely redes igned, 400 kg lighter due to Alumi nium body , ha s active suspension , new gearbox, minimal ist dashboard and offers better comfort. James then race s it against TerraMax at Nev ada Automotive Test Centre, Nevada. The race was to a hill 10 mile ac ross , passing th rough rocky terrain, hillock, mud, river and sand-tracks. TerraMax was switched to drone mode during the race to deflate the t yres an d ta ke a short-c ut. The Range Rove r's automa tic Terrain Response Syst em is demonstrated. James t akes a longer ro ute to ascend th e hill but st ill wi ns the race. At th e studio, the trio consi der the d riverless cars to be not very practical. The car has large fr ont b umpers made up of foam, large rea r-view mirro rs, squeaking ball under the brake-pedal, large magnifying -glass on the dashboard, sat nav (voiced by Richard Briers) with only four desti natons. The car has an artificial cat on the roof which later fell ove r on the way of Bingo hall. Richard lat er sho ws his system to find t he locati on of park ed c ar (t he car acti vates a fl are and then rele ases a b alloon). J eremy sh ows th at the radio onl y plays Horse of the Year Show theme on a loop, which both late r find to be irresistible to clap a long. The nam e of the car is revealed to be The James. They pic k up thre e elderly la dies from a pensioners' home for road-tes ting an d drive them to a bowli ng club wh ere it is sh own tha t Ric hard fitted the a irbag at the re ar for parking assist which inflates the airbag on close p roximity . Jeremy and Richard buy food for picnic, choo sing onl y British foods. They at tach t he shopping trol ley to Tow hitch and head for picn ic. The r oof of the car l eaks as it rains. Jeremy and R ichard end up cho osing a picnic spot on roadside where th ey find th e trolley to be damaged during reversing an d the food to be soaked, however they ate the food which was not ruined. The next day both leave Chris tchurch a nd Jeremy shows his sy stem to pre vent the ca r from bei ng driven on the wrong side of the road, the car initially sounds ala rm and la ter the tyres, doors a nd other parts of the car explode which stops the ca r and rende rs it imm obile . The episod e was shot in 2012. Challenge, Part 1 Buy u sed estate cars for up t o £1,500 in Brita in and report at a small villa ge in rura l Uganda. Jeremy a rrives in a BMW 528i Touring, Richard in a Subaru Impreza WRX Es tate and J ames in a Volvo 850R Wagon. The challenge is to find th e true source of the river Nile. They set off an discover that exploring isn't as difficult as firs t thought when they go on a ni ce easy dr ive and find Lake Victo ria, of whom the Vic torian Explorers thought was t he source of th e Nile. However they are t hen told that it is not the ac tual source of the N ile and there were two o ther disputed locat ions for it, one in Rwanda and on e in Burundi. However , Jer emy Clarkson insisted that both of these lo cations were wrong and decid ed to head wes t towards Lake Edwa rd to see whet her there was a link betwe en that lake an d Lak e Kivu in Rwanda. In their journey west, wher e they visit the Entebbe Airport and from there see the Ford Scorpio Estate back -up car. T hey continu e into Kampa la, Ugan da's Capital City where they get held u p in a traffic jam over night, the most hurrendous traffic the y'd ever seen . The y con tinue on wel l-maintained highways west finding their trip inc redibly easy be fore reac hing the t own of Mbarara in the southwest of the country, via a stop in Jezza, a vi llage in Mpigi District. Here they stay in a disgusting hotel, after driving through tea plantations in an attemp t to disco ver a lovely teahou se hotel, which in the mind of Richard, was bound to found due to te a progra mmes he'd se en. In Mbarar a th ey stayed in the Economic L odge with Je remy having a bed with faeces on it. Th ey left the hotel disgusted before Richard has the idea to make t he cars 'hotels'. James mo difies his Volvo by adding a library, Richard adds a cooker and Jere my a dds a coffin. T he co ffin he uses to pu t his clothes in, he sleeps on Egyptian Cott on. They leave for L ake Edward, camp ing overnight there because of its beauty bef ore heading in s earch of the river he ading for Lake Kivu. None of the ri vers connect the lake as they all head east rather than south. Th ey give up, leaving the m di sappointed. Then Jeremy looks at a map and d iscovers t he so urce of the Nile must be on the other side o f Lak e Victoria. His reasoni ng is that the Mediterranean Sea is effectively an i nland sea and so Gibralta r is the tr ue mouth of the Nile, rat her th an Alexandria in Egypt. After di scoveri ng this they decide th at they must drive straight t o the other side of Lake Victo ria to get to the sou theast coast in Ta nzania n ear the Serengeti.
