N ews The Dacia Sandero is now on sale in the UK. The Mercedes -Ben z SLS AMG Black has been update d to produce extra horsepow er, but t he handlin g is still chal lenging . Jeremy claims t hat he has found a male eq uivalent version of Fifty Shades of G rey, presenting a kid 's book about tractors . The new Ch evrolet Stingray is announced. James M ay turned fi fty the previous we ek. Also, the rally team composed of war amput ees (previ ousl y mentioned in series 17, episode 6) fin ally completed their challen ge of finish ing the 2013 Dakar R ally. Challenge Jeremy atte mpts t o build a car smaller than the P eel P50, naming his cre ation the P45. It w as ba sed on a q uad b ike, with bodywork fitted, designed to w rap around t he driver. He then presen ted h is id ea to the 'Dragons' in a Dragons' Den style format. All o f the dragons declare t hemselv es o ut and back in the studio, Rich ard concludes t hat for the P45 to be put in production, Jere my would have to be dead. 149Series 19, Episode 23 February 2013 Mick Fleet wood Challenge, Part 1 In anoth er challenge, th e pres enters picked t hree sup er cars to take on an epic race. Sin ce it was Hammond's turn t o select the chal lenge lo cation, th e team wen t to th e Western United States. J eremy selected the Lexus LFA, James chose the new Aston Martin Vanquish, and R ichar d took the SRT Viper. After a bri ef drive in the Nevada desert, the trio headed to Las Vegas Motor Speedway, specifically the drag strip, to compet e in drag races org anized by the L as Vegas P olice Departmen t; whom organized it with the t heory th at allowing people to drag r ace, legally , at a closed circ uit, would p reven t str eet racing. Desp ite t he high performance of their cars, the trio were beaten by modified pro duction cars, and 4WD ca rs, in each of their drag races. New s Jeremy comes u p with a solut ion on how to solve the crisis affecting Br itain's town centres sacki ng all traffic wardens and removing double yellow lin es. The trio then re view a Chin ese product designed to stop drowsiness behin d the wh eel, before they took a firs t look at the 2013 Ja guar F-Type. They prai sed its styling, but crit icized its h igh price tag of £60 ,000, as well as its targ et audience. James m entions Peu geot Citroen' s car intended to run on compres sed air; Jer emy attempted to use a fire extinguisher to demonstrate, but f ailed after only causing himself to t urn slowly around. In the e nd, James won the challenge by being hi t only 17 times. Star in a Re asonably Priced C ar Fleet wood Mac's Mick Fleetwood drove the Kia Cee'd ar ound t he Test T rack with a l ap of 145.4. Chal lenge, P art 3 Departing Wil low Springs, the g roup headed for Los Angeles, Californ ia. In order to do real world testing, Richard devised a challenge to see who could bu rn t he best e levens. The three instead ended up drawi ng a phallus and left LA. The team then s tayed for a night in Palm Springs . However, the producers gave them a fina l challenge. The thre e would dr ive fro m Palm Springs to the Mexican border a t Calexico the following morning, and the last to m ake it to the Mexica n border would h ave to travel in to the country itself to drive the Mastre tta MXT, a Me xican sports car m ade fun of by the presen ters i n an earlier series, for a lat er segme nt on the show. In revenge for taki ng them to America, Jeremy and James sa botaged H ammond's Viper, causing him to l ose 10 minut es in the race. Despite m aking a stop for fuel, Jeremy made it to the finish l ine first, with James in second. Richa rd t hen walked to the border being th e last person to arrive. At the studio, James and Jeremy e nd by saying that the Viper was awful and that the Vanquish and LFA we re amazing. 150Ser ies 19, Episode 310 Febru ary 2013Amy Macdo nald Revie w Jeremy reviews the Toyota GT86 and the Subaru BRZ. The car s are alm ost identical, but Jeremy prefer s the Toyota GT86. The S tig then completed a lap of t he T est Track in 1313. News They disc uss the new Subaru Impreza, which i s not coming to UK, and they th en talk abou t the ne w Maserati Quattrop orte. Challenge, Part 1 The p rodu cers have reserved a single ticket to a football match at the San Siro in Milan, Nor thern Italy. The tr io have a race from Wemb ley Stadium to th e San Siro. Je remy drives the Shel by Mustang GT500 and Ri chard and James tra vel on public t ransport. Simil ar to the previous race to Monte Carlo, Rich ard and J ames are not allo wed t o use any cars, and Jeremy is not allow ed to use any tra ins. Accordi ng to Jerem y, since the last epic rac e, th e train s have become faster a nd boat s have beco me slower. Richard and James opened up a big l ead whilst travelling on the Eurostar , and arrive in Paris whil e Jeremy was still cros sing the Eng lish Channel on a ferry. Aft er re aching F rance, Jeremy discovers that the Mustang o nly holds 50 litres in its fuel tank. After leaving Paris, Richard and James discuss what to do upon arrivi ng in Milan — as there are two of th em but only one ticket. Hundreds of miles behind, Jeremy ends part 1 of the challenge stat ing out loud , I' m gonna lose ! Star in a Reason ably Priced Car Am y Macdonald drove the Kia Cee'd around the Test Track in 144.4. During one o f her practice runs, Amy accident ally de stroyed on e of the runway lig hts, which Jeremy gives to her after r evealing the lap ti me. Challenge, Part 2 The high speed TG V slowed down a s it approached t he mountains that surround Northern Italy. Jeremy began to catch up and was n early neck and neck w ith the train, until road works at t he Mon t Blanc Tunnel slow him down. The train starts to accelerate again and reaches N orthern Italy ahead of Jeremy . Richard and Jam es use a tube net work to get to the stre ets n ear the finish line. James maintains his opposition to run on t elevision and Ric hard ru ns off alone to find the fin ish line, which is at a bar in the IM Villa Veuve Cli equot. James then assembled a bike which he had hidden in one of his bags and r ides t o the bar, only to find that Richard is alre ady there and ha s won the race and the ticket to the footba ll match. Mo ments late r, Jeremy arrived and accepted defea t for the first time ever in an epic r ace of all the series. 151Series 19, Episode 417 February 2013Lewis H amilton Review Jeremy reviews the Vauxhall Astra VXR, Ford Focus ST a nd Renault Megane Ren ault Sp ort Cup. The Stig did laps of each car, the Focus being the slowest at 129.6, the Astra VXR at 128.3, and the Megane in 127.7. De spite this, Jeremy chose the Astra VXR as t he best over all car of the three. News They d iscuss the newe st cars, such as t he Alfa Rom eo 4C , the next genera tion Ford Mustang w ould be sol d in G reat Britai n, but the UK version would come with a 2.0 EcoBoost engine, and the importance of the handbrake turn in mal e developme nt. Review Jeremy tests the all new K ia Cee 'd, putting it through a myriad of strange road tests. I ncludi ng Matt LeBlanc doing a lap w ith both the old a nd new Cee'd, Bruce W illis (in character as John McClane ) testin g the horn of the Cee 'd, Eric Clapton testing it s auxiliary input jack , and Jer emy testing the Cee'd's se lf parallel parkin g fe atur e. Minding his word s, he states that the MXT wa s an ambitious undertaking fo r the fir st-time manufacturer, but that it had its sha re o f flaws. Challenge J eremy and James pla y car rugby using Kia Cee'ds and Kia Spo rtages at Twickenham Stadium and Stig in Vauxhall Astra Police car as the referee. Jeremy' s team wins. 152Series 19, Epis ode 524 February 2013James McAvoy Challe nge, Part 1 Jeremy and R ichard attem pt to de sign a c ar target ed at elderly people. Jeremy dem onstrate s th e co mplexity of modern c ars' dshboa rd. Richard brin gs a Fiat Multipla and both modify it. Jeremy breaks the dashboard and replaces it conside ring it to be too comp licat ed for elders. Richard asks for the airbags saying that it is dangero us f or the elderly who are as de licate as childr en, and that he ne eds it f or a s afety fea ture. Jeremy makes a speedometer whi ch reads 20 mph at the top speed, he also uses an ol d design switch for rear fog light which does no thin g. Jeremy installs a pet-cage and replaces the back seat with high seat chairs and th e Fiat ba dge with a Rover one. They pain t it in beige after observing the shade of a hearing aid. Richard uses wate r-resista nt fabric as seat covers, and w hile stitching hurts his eye. They comple te the car and e nd the part 1 with Rich ard weari ng heavy bandages over his left eye. N ews Volkswa gen will launch GTI version of the new Go lf and GT v ersion of Up will be launched. Kia wil l launch th e Pro Cee'd GT. The Min i Paceman is launched, and t he trio mock the front end of the car, claiming th at it looks depressing. The trio agr ee that the British a re the best drivers. Alfa-R omeo releas es photographs of the Gl oria, in w hich the trio ma ke fun of it's name. Richard had arrived late so James and Jeremy had attempted to play tenni s with cars (which has a lot of editing). Revie w James reviews the new Range Rover in London. The new car is complete ly redes igned, 400 kg lighter due to Alumini um bo dy, has ac tive sus pension, new gearbox, minimalist dashboard and off ers better comfort. James then races it agains t Terra Max at Nevada Automotive Test Centre, Nevada. The race was to a hill 1 0 mile across, p assing t hrough rocky terrain, hillock, mud, river and sand-tr acks. TerraMax was switched to drone mode d uring the ra ce to deflate the tyres a nd take a short- cut. The Range Rover's automatic Te rrain Response System is demo nstra ted. James takes a longer route to ascend the hill but still win s the race. At the studio, the trio co nside r the driver less cars to be not very practical. The car has large front bum pers made up of foam, lar ge r ear-view mirrors, squeaking ball under the brak e-pedal, large magni fying-glass on the dashboard, sat nav (vo iced by Richard Bri ers) with o nly four destinatons. The c ar has an ar tificia l cat on the r oof which la ter fell over o n the wa y of Bingo hall. Rich ard later shows his system to find the location of parked car (the c ar activa tes a flare and then releases a ballo on). J eremy shows that the ra dio only plays Horse of the Year Show theme on a loop, which bot h lat er f ind to be irresistible to clap along . The name of the c ar is reveal ed to be The James. The y pick up three eld erly ladies from a pensioners' hom e for road-testing and drive the m to a bowling club wher e it is shown that Richard fitted the airbag at the rear for parking assist which inflates the air bag on clos e proximity. Jeremy and Richard buy foo d for picni c, choosing only Briti sh food s. They attach the shopping tr olley to T ow hitch and head for picnic. The roof of the car leaks as it rain s. Jeremy a nd Richard end up choosing a picnic spo t on roads ide where th ey find t he trolley to be damaged d uring rev ersing a nd the food to be soaked, h owever they ate the food whic h was not ruined. The next day both leave Christchu rch and Jeremy shows his syst em to pre vent the car f rom being driven on the wrong side of the road, the car ini tially so unds a larm and later the tyres, do ors and other parts of the car ex plode whic h stops the car a nd ren ders it immobi le. In their journey west, where they visi t the Ente bbe Airport and from t here see t he Ford Scorpio Estate back-up car. They cont inue into Kampala, Uganda's Capital City where t hey get held up in a t raffic jam overnight, the most hurr endous traffic they 'd ever seen . The y co ntinue on well-maintained high ways w est findi ng their tri p incredibly easy before reaching the town of Mbarara in the sou thwest of the cou ntry, via a stop in Jezz a, a vi llage in Mpigi Distr ict. Here they s tay in a di sgust ing hotel, after dri ving thro ugh tea plan tations in an attempt to disc over a lovely teahouse hotel, w hich in the mind of Richard, wa s bound to found due to tea programme s he'd seen. In Mbarara t hey st ayed in the Economic Lodge with Jeremy having a bed with faeces on it. Th ey l eft the ho tel disgu sted before Richard has t he ide a to make the cars 'hotels '. James modifies hi s Volvo by adding a library , Richard adds a cooker and Jeremy adds a coffin. The c offin he uses to put his clothes in, he sleeps on Egyptian Co tton. They leave for Lake Edw ard, campin g ov ernight there becau se of its beauty before heading in search of the river heading for L ake Kivu. None of the riv ers con nect the la ke as they all head east rather than south. Th ey g ive up, leaving them disappoi nted. Then Jeremy looks at a map and discovers the source of the Nile must be on the othe r side of La ke Victoria . Hi s re asoning is th at the Med iterranean Sea is effe ctively an inland sea and so Gibraltar is the true mouth of the Nile, rath er than Alex andria in Egypt. After discoveri ng this they decide t hat the y must drive straight t o the other sid e of Lake Vi ctor ia to get to the s outheast coast in Tanzania near the Se rengeti.
