Jeremy claims that he has found a male equivalent v ersion of Fifty Shades of Grey, prese nting a kid's book about tractors. The new Che vrolet Stingr ay is announced. James Ma y turned fifty the previous week. Also, the rally team composed of war amputees (pre viou sly mentione d in series 17, episode 6) finally complete d their challenge of f inishing the 2013 Dakar Rally. Review James reviews the new Be ntley Continental GT, an d notes t he ne w en gine and subtle ride chara cteristics. Bel ieving tha t the Be ntley, with four wh eel dri ve system and a big, po werful eng ine, can ha ndle things worse than a We lsh countrys ide road, James take s the car onto a Welsh stage of the World Ra lly Championship, with Kris Meeke behind the wheel, and James being the co-driver. De spite the car having less grip, more weight , an electronic handbrake (unsuitable for usage on a ra lly stage) and James not being proficient at giving pace notes, the Bentley was actual ly fas ter than one of the full WRC cars. Since it was Hammond' s tur n to sele ct t he challenge locati on, the team we nt to the Western Unit ed States . Jerem y selected the Lexus L FA, James chose the new Asto n Martin Vanqui sh, and Richard took the SRT Viper. Aft er a brief drive in the Nevada desert, the trio headed to Las Vegas Motor Speedway, sp ecifi cally the dra g st rip, to comp ete in drag races organize d by t he Las Vegas Police Department; whom org anized it with the theory that allowing peopl e to drag race, legally, at a closed cir cuit, would p revent st reet racing. D espite t he high pe rformance of their cars, the trio were beat en by modified production cars , and 4WD c ars, in each of their drag races. News Jerem y comes up wit h a solution on how to solv e the cri sis a ffecting Britain's t own centres sacking all traffic wardens and removing dou ble yellow lines. The trio then review a Chinese p roduct designed to stop dr owsin ess behind the whe el, befor e they took a f irst look at the 2013 Jaguar F-T ype. They praised its styl ing, but criticized its high pri ce tag of £60,000, as well as its target audience. James mentio ns Peuge ot Citroen's car intended to run on compress ed air; Jeremy attempte d to use a fire extin guisher to d emonstra te, but f ailed after onl y caus ing himself to turn slo wly around. Challenge, Part 2. When they r each Willo w Springs, they are forced to play an aerial version of Laser Quest , where th ey would drive 5 laps around the track, whil st being chased by two Aermacchi SF.260 armed wit h laser guns . In the end, James won the chall enge by being hit o nly 17 times. Star in a Reasonably Price d Car Fleetw ood Mac's Mick Fleetwoo d drove the Kia C ee'd arou nd the Tes t Track with a lap of 145.4. Challenge, Part 3 Departi ng Willow S prings, th e gr oup he aded fo r Los Ang eles, California. In orde r to do real world testing, R ichard devised a challenge to see who could burn the best el evens. The three i nstead ended up drawing a phallus and left LA . The team th en stayed for a night in Palm Springs. However , the producers gave them a final challenge . The three would drive from Palm S prings to the Mexic an border at Calexico the following mornin g, and the last to make it to the Mexican border would have to travel into the country its elf to drive the Mastretta MXT, a Mexican sports ca r made fun of by the presenters in an earlier series, for a later seg ment on the s how. In revenge for taking them to Ame rica, Jerem y and James sabotaged Hammond's Viper, causing him to lose 10 minut es in the race. Despite making a stop for fuel, Jeremy made it to the finish line first , wit h James in second. R ichard then walked to the b order being the last person to arrive. At the studio, James an d Jeremy e nd b y saying that the Viper was awful and that the Vanquish and LFA were amazing. 150Se ries 19, Episode 310 February 2013Amy Macdo nald Revi ew Je remy re views the Toyota GT86 and the Subaru BRZ. News They discuss the new Subaru Impreza, which is not comin g to UK, a nd t hey t hen talk about the n ew Maserati Quattroporte. Challenge, Pa rt 1 The producers have r eser ved a single ticket to a footba ll match a t the San Siro in Milan, Northern I taly. T he trio hav e a race from Wemb ley Stadium to t he San Siro. Jer emy dri ves the Shelby Mustan g GT500 and Richard and Jam es travel on public tr ansport. Simila r to th e previous race to Monte Carlo, Ric hard an d James a re not allo wed to use any cars, and Jeremy is not allowed to use any t rains. According to Jeremy, since the last epic ra ce, the trains have become faster and boats have become slo wer. Richard and J ames op ened up a big lea d whilst travelling on the Eurosta r, and arrive i n Paris whi le Jeremy was still crossing the Englis h Channel on a ferry. After reaching France, Jeremy discovers that the Must ang only holds 50 litre s in its fuel tank. After leaving Paris, Richard and James discuss what to do upon arrivin g in Milan — as there are two of them but only one ticket. Hun dreds of miles behind, Jeremy ends part 1 of the challenge stat ing out loud, I' m gonna lose! During one of h er p ractice runs, Amy accid entally destro yed one of the runway lights, which Jeremy gi ves to her after revealing the lap time. Challenge, Part 2 The high speed TGV slowed do wn as it approached the moun tains that surrou nd Northern It aly. Jere my began to catch up and was nearly n eck and nec k with the train, un til road works at the Mont Blanc Tunnel slow him down. The train starts to accelerate again and reaches Northern Italy ahead of Je remy. Richard and James use a tube netwo rk to get to the streets near th e finish line. James maintains h is o pposit ion t o run on television and Richard runs off al one to find the finish line, which is at a bar in the IM Villa Veu ve Cliequot. James then assemble d a bike which h e had hidden in one of his bag s and rides to th e bar, only to find that Ric hard is already there and has won the race and the ti cket to the foot ball match. Moments later, Jeremy ar rived and accepted defeat for the first tim e ever in a n epic r ace of all the series. 151Series 19 , Episode 417 Febru ary 2013Lewis Hamilton Review Jeremy reviews the Vauxhall A stra V XR, Ford F ocus ST and Renault Megane Rena ult Sport Cu p. The Stig did laps of each c ar, the F ocus being the slowest at 129.6, the Astra VXR at 128.3, and the M egane in 127.7. Jeremy breaks the dashboard and replaces it considerin g it to be too co mplicated for elders. Richard asks for the a irbags sa ying that it is dangerous for the elderly who are as delica te a s children, and that he needs it for a safety feature. Jeremy makes a sp eedometer which reads 2 0 mph at the t op speed, he also uses an old design switch for rear fog light whic h does n othing. Jeremy installs a p et-cage and replac es the back seat with high s eat chai rs and the Fiat badge with a Rover one. They paint it in be ige after o bserving the shade of a heari ng aid. Richard uses wat er-resistant fab ric as seat cov ers, and while stitching hu rts his ey e. They complete the c ar and end the part 1 with Richar d wea ring heavy bandages over hi s left eye. News Volk swag en w ill launch GTI vers ion of th e new Golf and GT version of Up will be launched . Kia will launch the P ro Cee'd GT. The Mini Paceman is launched, and the trio moc k th e front end of the car, claimi ng that it looks depressing. The trio agree that th e Br itish ar e the best drivers. Alf a-Romeo relea ses photo graphs of t he Gloria, in which the t rio make fun of it's name. Richar d had arrived late so Ja mes an d Jeremy had attempted to play tennis w ith cars (whic h has a lot of editing). Review Jam es reviews the new Range Rover in Lo ndon . The new c ar is completely redesigned, 400 kg l ighter due to Aluminium body, has act ive suspension, new gearbox, minimalis t dash board and of fers bette r comfort. James then races it against Te rraMax at Nevada Automotive Test Centre, Nevada . The race was to a hill 10 mile across, passing through rocky terrain, hillock , mud, river and sand- trac ks. TerraMax was switched to drone mode during the race to defl ate the ty res and take a short-cut. The Range Rover's automatic Te rrain Response Syste m is demonstrated. James takes a longer route t o ascend the hill but st ill wins the race. At the st udio, th e trio consider the driverless cars to be not ve ry pract ical. Th e car has larg e front bumper s made up of foam, larg e rear-view mirrors, sque aking ball under th e brake-ped al, larg e magnifying-glass on the dashb oard, sat nav (v oiced by Richard Briers ) with only four destinatons. The car has an art ificial cat on the roof which later f ell over on the way of Bingo hall. Richard later sh ows his system to find the location of parked c ar (the ca r activ ates a flare an d then releases a balloo n). Jeremy shows that the radio only plays Horse of the Year Show theme o n a loop, wh ich bo th later find to be irresistible to clap alon g. The nam e of the ca r is revealed to be The Ja mes. They pic k up thr ee elderly ladies from a pension ers' home for r oad-testing and drive them to a bowling club where it is shown that Richard fitted the airbag at the rear for pa rking as sist whi ch inflates the airbag on close proximity. Jeremy and Ric hard buy food for picnic, choosing only British foods. They attach the shopping tro lley to Tow hitch and he ad for pi cnic. The ro of of the ca r leaks as it rains. Jeremy and Richard end up c hoosing a picnic spot on r oadside where they find the trolley to be dam aged durin g reversing a nd the food to be soaked, ho wever they ate the foo d which was not ruined. The next day both leave Christchurch and Jeremy shows hi s sy stem to pre vent the car from being d riven on the wrong side of t he ro ad, the car ini tially sounds alar m and later the tyres, doors a nd other part s of th e car explode whic h stops the car and renders it im mobi le. In Mbarara they stayed in the Econom ic Lodge wi th Jeremy having a bed with faeces on it. They l eft the hotel di sgusted before Richard ha s the idea to ma ke the cars 'hotels'. Jam es modifies his Volvo by adding a libra ry, Richard adds a cooker and Jerem y adds a c offin. Th e coffin he uses to put his clot hes in , he sleeps on Egyptian Cotton. They leav e for Lake Edward, camp ing overnight there because of its beauty be fore h eading in search of the river hea ding for Lake Kivu. None of the river s connect t he la ke as they all head east rather than south. T hey give up, leaving them disappo inted. The n Jeremy loo ks at a map and discovers the source of th e Nile must be on the ot her side of Lake Victoria . His rea soning is t hat the Med iterranean Sea is e ffectivel y an inland sea and so Gibraltar is the true mouth of the Nile, rath er than Alexandria i n Egypt. After discoverin g this the y decide that they must drive straight to the other side of Lake Victoria to get to the southeast c oast in T anzania near the Sere ngeti.
