We meet a very different Birgitte N yborg (Sids e Babett Kn udsen) in the third season than the person we last saw speaking from the lectern in parliament. She is no longer prim e minister. It is two and a half years since she called an election in which she failed to wi n the required number of seats to mai ntain the existing gov ernment. Nyb org had to resig n, an d chose at the same t ime to step down as p arty lea der in order to make way for new, up- and-coming f igures. She has thus left polit ics, and is now a highly- paid spe aker in t he business world. She also sits on seve ral major boards, which re quires her to do a lot of travellin g. Her old party, the Moderates, has change d cours e somewhat. The current party leader is Birgitte's former crown prin ce, Jacob Kruse (Jens Jacob Tychsen), who previously be trayed her, after whic h she promoted him to the post of EU Commissioner to ge t rid of him. He has contrib uted to pulling the Moderates in a more cons ervative dire ction, so that even on the immigrati on issue, th e party is beginning to approach the politics of the current go vernment, led by Lars Hesselb oe. Birgitte N yborg has co nsciously tried to put political life in Denmark behind her, but she begins to pay more and more attention to the change of course in the Modera te party. It becomes incr easingly difficult f or her to observe f rom the sid elines the political deals th at the Moderate are enter ing in to. She can no longer brush off the recurring questi on of what she wou ld do if she were Prime Minister. Now she chooses to respond, and to show comm itment. Kasper could not live in a relat ionship with Ka trine once they be came a small family, s o they now live se parately and share e qually in looki ng after Gu stav.
