We meet a very dif ferent Birgitte Nyborg (Sidse B abett Knudse n) in the third sea son than the person we last saw speaking from the lect ern in pa rliament. Sh e is no longer prime minister. It is two and a half years since she called an election in which she failed to win the required nu mber of se ats to main tain t he existi ng government. N ybor g had to re sign, and chose at the same time to step dow n as party lead er in order to make wa y for new, up-and-comin g figure s. She ha s thus left politics, and is now a highly-paid speaker in the bus iness world. She also sits on se veral majo r boards, wh ich requi res her to do a lot of tra velling. Her old party, the Moder ates, has changed cour se somewhat . The current party leader is Birgitte's fo rmer c rown prince, Jac ob Kruse (Jens Jacob Tych sen), who p reviousl y betrayed h er, after which sh e promote d him to the post of E U Commissio ner t o get rid of hi m. He has contr ibuted to pulling the M oderat es in a more conserv ative dire ction, so that even on the imm igration issue, the part y is beginning to approach the politic s of the current government, led b y Lars Hesselboe. Birgitte Nyborg has consciously tried to put political life in D enmark behind her, b ut she b egins to pay more and more attention to the change of course in the Moderate party. It becomes increasingl y difficult for her to obse rve fr om the sidelines the p olitical deals that the Moderate are ent ering in to. During a talk she is hold ing for yet another group of Danis h businesspeople, it all suddenly becomes to o much for her. She can no longer brush off the recurring question of what she would do if she wer e Prime Minister. Now sh e chooses to respon d, and to show co mmitm ent. Kasper could not li ve in a relati onship with Ka trine once they be came a small f amily, so they now l ive separat ely and share equally in looki ng after Gus tav. Katrine is st ill wor king a lot as a leadin g anchor on TV1, and must draw a great deal on he r mother to help he r to get her everyday li fe to function.
