Former police detective Adrian Monk (Tony S halhoub), whose photo graphi c memory and amazing ability t o piece together tiny clue s made him a local legend, has suffer ed from i ntens ified obsessive-compulsive disorder an d a variety of phobias since the unsolved mur der of his wife, Trud y, in 1997. Now on psychiatric leave from the San Francisco Police Department a nd working as a freelance detective consult ant on difficult cases , Mon k hopes to convince his former boss, Captain L eland Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine), to allow him to return to the force. Stottlemeyer, who wavered betwe en admirati on for Monk and annoyance at his ecce ntrici ties during the first season, is becoming more of a friend to Monk as t he series devel ops, frequently calling him in to hel p, as much fo r Monk's benefit as for his own. Howe ver, h e knows Monk 's limita tions as well as his stren gths and may still harbor doubts about the wisdom of allow ing Monk to carry a gun o r subdue a perpetrator.
