Former police detec tive Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub), whose photographic me mory and ama zing ab ility to piece toget her tiny c lues made him a local legend, has suffered from inte nsif ied obsessi ve-com pulsive disorder and a vari ety of phob ias since the unsolve d murder of his wife, Trudy, in 1997. Now o n psychiatric leave from the San Francisco Poli ce Department and working as a freelance detective c onsultant on difficult cases, Monk hopes to convince hi s for mer b oss, Captai n Leland Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine), to allow him to retur n to the for ce. Stottle meyer, who w avered between admiration for Monk and an noyance at his e ccentricities during the first season, is becom ing mor e of a friend to Mo nk as the series develo ps, frequently call ing him in to h elp, as much for Monk's benefit as for his own.
