Former police detective Adria n Monk (Tony Shalhoub ), whose photogr aphi c memory and amaz ing ability to piece toge ther tiny clues made him a local legend, h as suffered f rom intensified ob sessive-compulsive disord er and a variety of phobias since the unsolved m urder o f his wife, T rudy, in 1997. Now on psy chiatric leave from the San Francisco Police Depa rtment and working as a f reelance d etective consultant on difficult cases, Monk hopes to convince his former bos s, Captain Leland Stottlemeyer (Ted Lev ine), to allow him t o return to the f orce. Stottlemeyer, who waver ed between admiration for Monk and annoyance at his eccentric ities during the first season, is becoming more of a friend to Monk as the seri es dev elops, frequ ently callin g him in to help, as much for Monk's benefi t as for h is own. Howeve r, h e knows Monk's lim itations as well as hi s strengths and may still h arbor doubts about the wisdom of a llowing Mo nk to carry a gu n or subdu e a per petrator. Stottlemeyer's second-in-command, Lieutenant Ran dall Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford), a lso seems to be develop ing both admiration and compass ion for the man he once l abel ed the defective detective.De spite flaws and inadequacies all around, the three are becoming an in creasi ngly effective team, wi th addit iona l help from Monk's personal assistant.
