"Bob Dylan going el ectric" at th e 1965 Newport Fol k Festiva l is one of th ose epochal moments in rock history tha t se emingl y ev eryone has heard a bout, but what few people seem to know is that it was n't s ome ephemera l event that we only know f rom word of mouth -- filmmaker Murray Lerner d ocumented the performances at the Newport Fes tival f or severa l year s running, and The Other Side of the Mirror c ollec ts footage from the t hree years Dylan appeared at the celebrated f olk g athering, al lowing us to see Dylan's rise through the folk scene for o urselves. Watchin g Lerner's document ary, what' s most remar kable is how muc h Dylan c hanged over the course of 36 months; the young folkie performin g at the afternoon "workshop" a t the side of Joan Baez i n 1963 is at once nervy and hesi tant , singing his wordy tunes while chopping away at his acoustic guitar and energizing the cr owd without seeming to know just what he's doing. In 1964, Dylan all but owns Newpo rt, and he clearly kn ows it; he's the talk of the F estival, with Baez and Johnny Cas h singing his praises (and his songs), and his command of the sta ge is visibly strong er a nd more confident w hile his new material (includi ng "Mr. Tambourin e Man" and "It Ain't Me, B abe") sees him moving away from the "protest son gs" th at first made his name. When t he audience demands an encore af ter Dylan's evening set (Od etta and Dave Van Ronk were scheduled to follow him), Peter Yarrow tries to keep the show moving alo ng while Dylan beams at the crow d's adulation, like the rock star he was quickly becoming. By the t ime the 1965 Newport Festival rolled aroun d, Dy lan's epochal "Like a Rolling Stone" was starting to scale the singles char ts, and the hardcore folk audience was clearly of two minds about h is popul ar (and populist) su ccess. When Dylan, Fender Stratocas ter in hand, perform s "Maggie's Farm" backed by Al Kooper, Mike Bl oomfield a nd the rhythm section from the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, the raucou s but h ard-driving number inspires a curious mi xture of enthusiasti c cheerin g and equally e mphatic boo ing, and whi le l egend has i t that the ve rsion of "Lik e a Rolling Stone" that foll owed was a shamble s, the son g cook s despit e drummer Sa m Lay's diff iculty in finding t he groove, though if anything t he division of t he crowd's loyalties is even st ronger afterward. After these tw o numbers, Dylan and his b and leave the stage, with Yarr ow (once again serving as MC) cit ing tech nica l problems (if P ete Seeger really pull ed the pow er on Dylan, as legend has it , there's no sig n of it h ere); Dylan r eturns to th e stage with an a coustic six -string to sing "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "I t's All Over Now, B aby Blue" before vanishing into the night w ithout comment. While much of th e audie nce at Newport in 1965 want ed the "old" Dyl an back, his strong, willful perf orma nces even on the acoust ic stuff makes it obvious that the scra ppy semi-a mateur we saw at the beginn ing of the movie w as gone fore ver, and the ovati ons sugg est m ore than a few people wanted to see Dyl an rock. Le rner's film tells us a cer tain amount of what we a lready knows, but it gent ly debunks a few myths about Dylan during this pivo tal moment in his career , and his perf ormances are c ommitted and forceful throughout; no matter how many times you've read about Dylan's Newport shoot -out of 196 5, see ing it is a revelatory experience, and Lerner has asse mbled this ar chival mate rial with intelligence and taste. This is must-see viewing for anyone interested in Dylan or the folk sc ene of the ' 60s.
