"Bob Dylan going electric" at t he 1965 New port Folk Festival is one of those epochal moments in roc k hist ory that seemingly everyone has heard about, but what few people seem to know is that it wasn't s ome ephem eral event that we only k now from word o f mouth -- filmmake r Murray Ler ner docum ented the performances at the Newpor t Festiv al for sever al yea rs ru nning, and The Other Side of the Mirror collec ts foot age from the three yea rs Dylan ap peared at the celebrate d folk gathe ring , allowin g us to see Dylan's rise through the folk scene for our selves. Watc hing Lerner's documentary, what's most remarkable is how much Dylan ch anged over the course of 36 month s; the you ng folkie perfo rming at the after noon "wor kshop" at the side of Joan Ba ez in 1963 is a t once ne rvy and hesitant, singing his wordy tunes w hile chopping away at his acoustic guitar and e nergizing the crowd wi thout see ming to know just what he 's doing. In 1964, Dylan all but owns New port, and he clearly knows it; he' s the talk of t he Fe stival, wi th Baez an d Johnny Cash singing his praises (and hi s songs), and h is comma nd of the stage is visibly stronger and more confid ent whil e his new material (including "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "It Ain't Me, Babe") sees him moving away f rom the "pr otest son gs" that first ma de hi s name. When the audience dem ands an encore after Dylan's even ing set (Odetta and Dav e Van Ronk w ere s chedule d to follow him), Peter Yar row tries to ke ep the show m oving along while Dylan b eams at the crowd' s adu lation, like the rock star he was quickly becoming. By the time the 1965 Ne wport Fest ival rolled around, Dylan's epochal "Like a Rolling Stone" was starti ng to scale th e singles charts, and the hardcore folk au dience was clearly of two m inds about his popul ar (and populist) success. Wh en Dylan, Fender Stratocas ter in hand, perform s "Maggi e's Farm " ba cked b y Al Kooper, Mike Bloom fiel d an d the rhythm section from the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, the raucous but hard-dr iving n umber inspires a curiou s mixture of enthusiastic cheering and equally empha tic booing, and while legend has it that the version of "Like a Rolling St one" that followed wa s a shambles, the song cooks despite drumm er Sam Lay's difficulty in finding the groove, th ough if anythin g the di vision of the crowd's loyalt ies is e ven stronger afterw ard. Aft er the se two numbers, Dyl an and his band leave the stage, with Yarrow (once a gain serving as MC) c iting techn ical problems (if Pe te Seeger really pulled the pow er on D ylan, as legend h as it, there's no sign of it here); Dylan returns to the stage with an ac oustic six-string to sing "Mr. Tambour ine Man" and "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" before vanishing into t he night without comm ent. Whi le much of the audienc e at Newport in 1965 wanted the "old" Dylan back, his s trong, willful performa nces even on the acoust ic stuf f makes it obv ious that th e scrap py semi-amateur w e saw at the b eginning of the movie was gone for ever, and th e ovati ons suggest more than a few people wanted to see Dylan rock . Lerner's film tells us a cer tain amount of what we already knows, but it gently debunks a few myths about Dylan d uring this p ivotal momen t in his career, and his performances ar e committed and forcef ul throughout; no matt er how ma ny tim es you'v e read a bout Dylan's Newport shoot-out of 1965, seeing it is a rev elato ry experience, and Lerner has assembled this a rchival m aterial with int elligence and taste. This is must -see view ing for any one interested in Dylan or the folk scene of the '60s.
