"Bob Dylan going electric" at the 1965 Newport Folk Festiva l is one of tho se epochal moments in rock history that seeming ly everyone has heard about, but what f ew people se em to kn ow is that it wasn 't some ephemeral event that we o nly know from w ord of mou th -- f ilmma ker Murray L erner document ed the performances at the Newport Festival for several years running, an d The Oth er Side of the Mi rror collects footage from the three ye ars Dylan appeared at the ce lebrated folk gathe ring, allow ing us to see Dylan's rise through the folk scene for ourselves. Watchi ng Ler ner's documen tary, what's most remark able is how muc h Dylan changed over the cours e of 3 6 months; the you ng folkie performing at the afternoo n "works hop" at t he side of Joan Ba ez in 1963 is at once n ervy and hesi tant, sin ging his wordy tunes w hile chopping aw ay at his acoustic guitar and energ izing the crowd without seeming to know just what he's doing. In 1964, Dylan all b ut owns Newport, and he cle arly knows it; he's the t alk of th e Festival, with Baez and Johnny C ash singing his praises (and his songs), and his comma nd of the stage is visibly strong er and more confident whi le his new material (including "M r. Tamb ourine Man" and "It Ain 't Me , Babe") s ees him moving away from the "p rotest songs" that first ma de his name. Wh en the audience demands an encore after Dylan's evening set ( Odetta and Dave Va n Ronk wer e schedul ed to fo llow him), Peter Yarrow tries to keep th e sho w moving along while Dylan b eams at the crowd's adulation, like the rock star he w as quickly becoming. By the time the 1965 N ewport Festival rolled a round, Dylan's epoc hal "Like a Rolling Stone" was startin g to scale the singl es charts, and the hardcore folk audie nce was clea rly of two minds about his pop ular (and p opulist) s uccess. When Dylan, Fe nder Stratocaster in h and, performs "Maggie's Farm" backed by Al Kooper, Mi ke Blo omfield an d th e rhythm sec tion from the Paul B utterfield Blues Band, the raucous but hard-driving number inspires a curi ous mixture of enthusiastic cheering and equa lly emphatic booing, and while legend has it that the version o f "Like a Rolling Stone" that followed w as a shamble s, the song cooks despite drummer Sam Lay's difficulty i n finding the groo ve, tho ugh if anyth ing the divi sion of the crowd's loyalties is even strong er afterward. After these two numbers, D ylan and h is ba nd lea ve the stage, with Yarrow (on ce again s erving a s MC) cit ing t echnic al problem s (if Pet e Seeger really pulled th e power on Dylan, as legend h as it, there's no sign of it here); Dyl an return s to the stage with an aco ustic six -string to sing "Mr. Tambour ine Man" and "It's All Over Now, Baby B lue" before vanishing into the night withou t comme nt. While much of the audience at Newport in 1965 wa nted the "ol d" Dylan back, his s trong, willful p erformances even on the ac oustic stuff makes i t obv ious that the scrapp y semi -amateur we saw at the beginning of the m ovie was gone f oreve r, and the ovati ons sugge st more than a few people wanted to see Dylan rock. Lerner 's film tel ls us a certain amount of what we already knows, but it gently deb unks a few myths about Dylan dur ing this pivotal moment in his career, and his performan ces are comm itted and forceful thr ougho ut; no mat ter ho w many t imes you've read about Dylan's Newport shoot-out of 1965, seeing it is a rev elatory experien ce, an d Lerne r has assembled th is archival material with intelligence and taste. This is must- see viewing for anyone interested in Dylan or th e folk scen e of the '60s.
