Magda lena and Maria are two twin sisters who were separated at birth a nd know n othing of the other’s existence. Maria runs away from the boarding school in which she was b rought up and finds work as a cabaret performer in the cafés of Marseilles. Magdalena lives with her adopte d parents and wor ks in an ar t galler y. The two sisters a re joined by an invisib le bond which draws them towards the s ame tragic concl usion. Director Werner Sc hroeter has acquired a re putation as an exper imentalist filmma ker, hailed by some as an underrate d genius, reviled by others for bein g a peddler of self-indulgent kitsch. Deux is argu ably Schroe ter’s most am bitious, unsettling and rep ulsive work to date. The directo r certainly wastes no t ime in alienati ng his audie nce; from th e first ten minutes of t he film it is clear this is not going to be an easy ride. Th e narrativ e cuts haphazardly betwe en see mingly unconn ected events, a lternati ng between reali sm and styl ised fantas y dream se quences, periodically shocking the spectator with g raphic images of lesbian sex and a woman being slowly disembowelled. Havin g several acto rs playing multiple parts only adds to the sense o f artifice and utter confusion, w hich is a pity as there is manifest ly a lot of great acting talent on show – not least of which i s Isabelle Hupp ert.
