Magdalena and Maria are two twin siste rs who were separated at birth and know nothi ng of the other ’s exi stence. Maria runs away from the boa rding school in which she was brought up and finds work as a cabaret performer in the cafés of Marse illes. Magdalena live s with her adopted p arents and works i n an art g allery. The two siste rs a re joined by an invi sible b ond which draws them towards the same tra gic conclusion. Director W erner S chroeter has acquired a r eputati on as an experimentalist filmmaker, hailed by some as an underrated genius, reviled by oth ers fo r bein g a ped dler of self-indulgent kitsch . D eux is ar guably Schroeter’ s most a mbitious, unsettling and repulsive work to d ate. Th e di rector c ertain ly wastes n o time in alienat ing his audience; from the fi rst ten minutes o f the fi lm it is clear this is not going to be an easy ride. T he narrative cut s haphazar dly between seemingly u ncon nected events, alternating between rea lism and s tylised fant asy dream sequen ces, periodically shoc king the spectator with graphic i mages of l esbian sex a nd a woman bein g slowl y disembowelled. Having several actors playing multiple pa rts only add s to the sen se of artifice and utter confusion, whi ch is a pity as the re is manifestly a lot of great acting tale nt on show – not lea st of which is Isabelle Hup pert.
