Deux is arguably Schroeter’s most ambitious, unset tling a nd repulsi ve wo rk to date. The director c erta inly w astes no t ime in ali enat ing his audience; from the first ten minutes of the film it is clea r this is not going to b e an easy ride . The narrati ve cuts ha phazar dly bet ween see mingly unconnecte d events, alternating bet ween realism and stylised fantasy dream sequences, periodically shocki ng the specta tor with gr aphic images of l esbian sex and a w oman being slowly dise mbowe lled. Having several actors playing mult iple parts only add s to the sense of artif ice and u tter confusion, wh ich is a pity as t here is manifestly a l ot of great acting tal ent on show – not least of w hich is Isab elle Huppert.
