Magdal ena and Ma ria are two twin sisters who were separated at birth and know nothing of t he other’s existe nce. Director Werner Schroet er has acquired a reputation as an experimentalist filmmaker, hailed by some as an underrated genius, reviled by others for being a p eddler of self-indulgent kitsch. The director cert ainl y wastes no time in alienati ng his audience; from the f irst ten m inutes of the fil m it is cl ear this is not going to be an easy ride. T he narrative cut s haphazardly betw een seem ingl y unconnected events, alternating between realism and styli sed fantasy dream sequ ences, periodica lly shocking the spectator w ith graphic images of les bian s ex and a woman being slowly disembowel led. Having s everal actors playing multipl e parts o nly adds to the sense of artifice and utter con fusi on, which is a pity as there is mani festly a lot of great acting talen t on show – not leas t of wh ich is Isa belle Huppert.
