Constantly on the h unt and suffering from hallucina tions that drive his violent natur e, an unname d man is capturing women and savag ely beating them to death. The two must face off in a battle to the death, in which they are forced to reveal the horrible tr uth behind their addicti on to murder. “Brutal” takes an interes ting approach to its visuals , drawing heavy in fluence fro m Weste rn “Gri ndhous e” films, us ing a filter to make the foot age appear gra iny, damaged, and w ith li ght an d color fl uctuati ons. Un fort unately, the visual s tyling ends up feeling misguided, as other th an applyi ng the filter it does not imitate any other aspec ts of the “G rindhouse” genre . Despite trying to dirty up the film, it is appa rent it was shot on digital. The cinemato graphy is a lso a ste p above most “Grindho use” productions, with Takashi Hirose proving he ha s talent behind the camera. Exter ior s hots to tho se taking place in s mall spaces are all co mpetently frame d, lit, and trans ition wel l. The dec ision to add an e ffect on top of the work hurts the film’s imager y and even gives a s ense of desperation to try to capture a certain type of nost algia with the audience, instea d of relying on its own streng ths. It is unfortuna te when one creative choice can hurt a pr oductio n so much. Th e story of “Bru tal” is simp le but eff ective, it does at tempt some sort of soc ial c ommentary about the vio lent nature of men and wom en, but it does not offer enough d epth into the subject to jus tify the am ount of violence on display . The film d oes en d on a strong note with an interest ing twis t, with a reveal tha t is bound to gross some out, while giving others a c huckle.
