Constantly on the h unt and suffering from hallucinations tha t dr ive his vio lent nature, an unnamed man is capturin g women and savagely beating them t o death. Meanwhile, a woman is lu ring men into a violent end, by w ay of her knife. Driven by the sam e force to m ake the opposite sex suffer, the killers’ fates intertwine. The t wo must face off in a battle to the death, in which they are forc ed t o re veal the hor rible truth behind their addic tion to murder. “Brutal” takes an interesting ap proach t o its visuals, drawing heavy influe nce from Wes tern “Grind house” films, using a filter to make the foot age appear grainy, damaged, a nd with light and colo r fluctuati ons. Unfortunately, the visual styling ends up feelin g misguided, a s oth er tha n applying the filt er it does not i mita te any oth er aspects of the “Grindhouse” genre. De spite trying to dirty up the film, it is apparent it wa s shot on digital. The cin ematography is al so a step a bove most “Grindhouse” production s, with Ta kash i Hirose pr oving he has tale nt be hind the camera. Exterio r shot s to thos e taking place in small spaces a re al l competently framed, lit, and transition well. The decision to add an effect on top of t he work hurts the film’s imag ery and even gives a sense of desperation to try to capture a certain type of nostal gia with the au dience, inst ead of relying on its own strengths. It is unfor tunate when one cre ative choice can hurt a production so much. The story o f “Brutal” is simple but effective, it d oes attempt some s ort o f social c ommentary a bout the violent nature of men an d women, but it d oes n ot offer enough depth i nto th e subject to justify t he amount o f violen ce on display. The film do es end on a stron g note with an i nteres ting twi st, with a reveal that is bound to gross some out, w hile giving oth ers a chuckl e.
