This early 70's gia llo by Um berto Lenzi is certainly am ong t he best in his filmography and also in the whole genre. Pers onally I think Lenzi's best films are the funny cart oon-turned-film Kri minal, the stylish giallo Seve n Blood-Sta ined Orchids, the ex plosive Napoli vio lenta and this. In t he eighti es he d id p lenty o f film trash i n form of Eaten Alive, Hitc her in th e Dark or Black Demons , all of which are ripping so mething off andor very dull and slow moving. Knife of Ice came when the giallo boom was at its hottest and the r esult is convinci ng. Technic ally the fi lm is sup erb, contain ing great cinem atography in the b eginning when we learn a bout the ma in character' s trauma towards trains. From thi s poin t on, Lenz i shows us his ability to benefit the wid escreen an d, for example, the bicycle ride near the forest is genuinely beautif ul! This scene also shows Lenzi's ability to build suspense, ve ry slowly but mea ningfully. Aft er al l, th ere aren' t so many murders i n the whole film, only the s uspense ci rculating around the murderer's ident ity. One s uspect is a de vil worshipp er which brings new aspects to the myste ry. S ince the final scene t akes place in a chu rch, one can wo nder if Lenzi wanted to comment on something, maybe t he hypocritical morale of church and sup erstition. The ma in charact er (Carrol Baker) is m ute which demands a lot from her face and eyes. The actress works ver y wel l, giving us a believable p erformanc e circulatin g ar ound the em otions of fear and menta l pai n. The other act ors are good, too. The finall y, ho wever, may n ot give too positiv e a sight about female sex since the y all are expressed rather negati vely in the film, one way or another.
