This early 70's giallo by Umberto Lenzi is certainly among the best in his filmogr aphy and also i n the whole genr e. Personally I think Lenzi' s best films are the funny cartoo n-tu rned-film Kriminal, the stylish gial lo Seven Bloo d-Stai ned Orchids, the explosi ve Na poli violenta a nd this . In the eighties he d id ple nty of f ilm t rash in form of Eaten Alive, Hitcher in the Dark or Bl ack Demons , all of whic h are rippin g somet hing off andor ve ry dull and slow moving. Knife of Ice came when the giallo boom was at its hottest and the result is convincing. Technically the film is superb, containing great cinematography in the begi nning when we learn abo ut the main cha racter's trauma towards tr ains. From this point on, Lenzi shows us his ab ility to benefit th e widescre en and, for exampl e, the bicycle ride near the forest is g enuinely b eautiful! This scene also sho ws Lenzi's ability to build suspense, very slowly but mea ning fully. Aft er all, t here aren' t so many murder s in the whole f ilm, only th e suspense circul ating around the m urderer's identity. One s uspect is a dev il worshipper which brings new aspects to the mystery. Since the fin al s cene takes place in a church, one can wonder if Lenzi wa nted to comm ent o n something, m aybe t he hypocritical morale of c hurch and superstition. The ma in character (Carrol Baker) is mute which de mands a lot fr om her face and eyes. Th e actress works very well, giving us a believ able performance circulat ing around the emotion s of fear and mental pain . The other actors are good, too. The finally, however , may not give too positive a sight about female sex since the y all are expre ssed rathe r negativ ely in the film, one way or an other.
