In this v ery late 60's irreve rent, almost anarchic low-budget fil m, Bri an De Palma defines more of his strange, given H itchcock- like fasci natio n of voyeurism, and att acks the issues of the day. The mos t promin ent of which, bo th cringe-i nducing and just pl ain funny , is when he focuses on the bl ack-power movement (a bla ck woman han ding out f liers asking white people 'do y ou know what it 's like to b e black'), which is somethin g that could only work for that time and place, not before or now. But one of the key t hings to the i nterest in the film is 27 year old Robert De Niro (no t his first or last film with the director), who plays th is char acter who sits in a room looking out throu gh his telesc ope a t women in their room s, set ting up phony deals, and in the e nd basica lly throw ing bombs. Those who ha ve s aid that De Nir o can't act and just i s himself in every movie should see this movie, if only ou t of some minor curiosity. A couple of times in the film it's actually not funny, as when there's a distur bance in a b lack-power meeti ng (filmed in a g rainer , rough er style tha n the rest o f the film). In the end it's capped off with a ramblin g mono logue in a n interv iew that tops De Niro 's in King of Comedy. It's pre tty obvious where De Palma's career would go after thi s, i nto slightly more mainstrea m Ho llywood ter ritory, but all of hi s trademarks are here; the dark, almost na il-bitin g comedy, the pe rfectly t imed s tyle of voyeurism, and inte resting usag e of loc als. Thin k if De Palm a and De Niro did a Monty Python film, on ly even mo re low-budget a nd in its New Yor k way jus t as off-the-hi nges , and you got Hi, Mom!
