In this ve ry late 60's irreverent, almost anarchic low-budget film, B rian De Pa lma de fines m ore of h is str ange, given Hitchc ock-like f ascination of voyeurism, and attac ks the is sues of the day. The most promine nt of which, both crin ge-induci ng an d just plain funny, is when h e foc uses on the b lack-power m ovement (a black woman handing o ut fliers as king white p eople 'do you know w hat it's like t o be black'), which is something that could o nly w ork for that time and place, no t befo re o r now. But one of the ke y thin gs to the intere st in the film is 27 year old Robert De Niro ( not hi s first or last film w ith the director), who pla ys this c haracter who sits i n a room l ooking out through his tele scope at women in th eir rooms, s etting up phony deals , and in the e nd basically throwing bombs. Those wh o have sai d that De Niro ca n't act and just is himself in every movie shoul d see this movie, if o nly out of some minor curiosity. A coup le o f times in the film it's actually not funny, as when there's a di sturbance in a black-power meeting (filmed in a grai ner, rougher style than the res t of the film). In the end it's capped off with a ra mbling monologue in an inte rview that tops De Niro 's i n King of Comedy. It's pretty obvious where De Palma's career would go a fter this, in to sl ightl y more mainstream Hollywood ter ritory, but all of his trademarks are here; the dark, almost nail-biting comedy, th e perfectly timed sty le of voyeurism, and interesting usage of locals. Think if De Pal ma and De Niro did a Monty Python film, only ev en more low-budg et and in its New York way j ust as off- the-hinges, and you got Hi, Mom!
