Salomé (1923), a silent f ilm directed b y Charles Br yant an d starr ing Alla Nazi mova, is a film ada ptation of the Osc ar Wilde play of the same name. The play itsel f is a loo se retell ing of the biblical story of King Herod and his execution of John the Baptist (here, as in Wilde's play, called Jokaanan) at the request of his stepdau ghter, Salomé, whom he lusts after. Salomé is often called one of the first art film s to b e made in the U.S.[citation ne eded] The highly stylized costumes, exagg erated acting (even for the period), minimal sets , and absen ce of all but the most necessary props make for a screen image much more focused on atm osphere and on conveying a sense of the characters' individual heightened desires than on conventional plot d evelopmen t. Despi te the film being o nly a l ittle over an hour in length and having no real action to s peak of, i t cost over $3 50,000 to ma ke. All the sets were constructed indoors to be able to have complete control over the lig hting. The film was sh ot co mpletely in black a nd white , matching t he il lustrations done by Au brey Beardsl ey in the printed edition of Wil de's play. The costumes, d esigned by Natac ha Rambov a, us ed material only from Maison Lewis of Paris, such as the r eal silv er lamé loincloths wor n by the guards. No m ajor studio would be assoc iate d with the film, and it w as years after its completion before it was released, by a mino r indepen dent distrib utor. It was a complete failure at th e time and ma rked th e end of Nazimova' s producing career. A longsta nding ru mor, whi ch seems to have started whi le the f ilm w as still in production, suggests that its cas t is comprised entirely of gay a nd bisexu al acto rs in an homage to Oscar Wilde, as per st ar and producer Nazimova's demand . It is, of co urse, im poss ible to say, but one of the extras in Sal omé reported that a number o f the cast membe rs—both featured an d extras—were indeed gay, bu t not an un usual percentage of th em, a nd certainly not all of t hem. What can be said is that Naz imova herself was a les bian, the tw o guard characters (who, next to Salomé, have the most screen time ) are at least played very s tereotypically gay, and several of the female courtiers are men in drag . Salomé was screened in 1989 at t he N ew York International Festival o f Lesbian an d Gay films and i n 1990 a t th e New York Gay Ex perimen tal Film Festiv al.
