Salom é (1923), a silent film di rect ed by C harles Bryant and starring Alla Nazimova, is a fil m adaptation of the Oscar Wilde play of the sa me name. The p lay itself is a loose retelling of the bibli cal story of King Her od and his exec ution of John the Baptist (here, as in Wilde's pla y, called J okaanan) a t the requ est of his stepdaughter, Salom é, whom he lusts after. Despite the film bei ng only a li ttle over an hour in l ength and having n o real ac tion to s peak of, it cost over $350,000 to make. All the sets were construct ed indoors to b e able to have complete control over the light ing. The film was shot comp letely in black an d white, matching the illu strations d one by Aub rey B eard sley i n the pr inted edition of Wilde's play . The cost umes, de signed by Natacha Ram bova, used material only f rom Maison Lewis of Paris, such as th e real silver la mé loincloths worn by t he guards. No ma jor studio would be assoc iated with the film, and it was years af ter its compl etion before it was relea sed, by a minor independent dis tribut or. It was a complete f ailure at the time and mark ed t he end of Nazimova's producing career. A longstan ding rumor, which seems to have star ted while the film was st ill in producti on, suggests that it s cas t is comp rised ent irely of gay and bisexual actors in an homage to Oscar Wilde, as per star and produ cer Nazimova 's demand. It is, of course, impossibl e to sa y, but one of the extras in Salomé reported tha t a nu mber of the cast membe rs—both fea tured and extr as—wer e indeed gay, but not an unusual percentage of them, and cer tainly not all of them. Wh at can be said i s that Na zimova hers elf was a lesbian , the two guar d charac ters (w ho, next to Salomé , have t he most screen time) are a t least play ed very stereotypically gay, and s everal of th e fem ale courtiers ar e men in drag.
