David, now  an old man, is s till king of Israel. Am ong his  sons, the ambitious   Adonija h and the c  leve  r So lomon. The t wo y oung me n are fie rce rivals, since both are  pros pect ive heirs to the throne and only one c an be succ essfu l. During a hunting expedit  ion, Adonijah challenge s his younge r brother Solomon to a ch ariot race. Whi le Solomon, though  brave, s till retains a modicum of caution, the da redevil Adonijah is eager to wi  n at all  costs -- and loses control of  his char iot. Solomo n takes the serio usly injured Adonijah ba ck to Jerusalem . On the way there they meet the attractive   Abishag, wh o despite her youth is versed in the use of hea ling herbs. She act ually succee ds in helpin g the prin ce. Adonijah falls in love with A bishag -- b ut Bathsheb a arranges things  so that she works for David, hoping that her  youth, her beauty and her healing powers will sooth  e the o ld king's suf fering. Several members of  the influential pr iesthood and also t he respected army general Joab, w  ho served David loyally for many years, support Ad onijah's  claim to th e throne-- even though  David has still  not ma de any de cision wit h regard to  a potential successor. Adon ijah is for given on o ne co ndition that he always remains loyal to his br othe r Solomon. The great King David is dead, a  nd his so n Sol omon has succ eeded him as the rig htful ruler o f Israel. Adonijah now has a  request to make of Bathsheba he wants to marry Abishag. Solomon hears about t his seemingly inno cent wi sh, and recognizes it as a renewed ploy on  behalf of h is brother to reclai m the throne -- Adonijah's marr iage  to the last  woman t o share King  David's bed wo uld stren gthen his po litical pos ition considerably. Solomon know s that he has to act quickly a nd d ecisively if he is to se cure his own power. H e has his brother Adonijah and the latter's clo sest  associ ate Joab execut ed. Af ter this  radical deci sion, Solom  on withdra  ws to present sacr ifices. In a dream the  Lord appears   to  him and grants him the fulfillm ent of a wish, whatever it may be. Solomon merely asks for wi sdom -- in  order to become a goo  d ruler and judg e. War with Egypt is loomi ng. To arm h is kingdom a  gainst the terri torial amb itions  of it s powerful n eighb ors, Sol  omon not onl y introduces several  reforms but also  decides to marry the daughter of the  phar aoh. Th e Egyptian princess d oes no t remain S olomon's  only wife, however a s ti me goe s by  the king marr ies numerous no ble women from m any differe nt countries for  political  and econ omic reasons. In  this way he preserves peace  for his people, and creates great prosperity. By allowing the women to continu e practicing  their domes  tic customs and re  ligious ritu als in Je rusa lem as well, he comes into regular conflict with the p riesth ood, who see t he foreign religions a s endangering Israel' s sole covenant with the L ord. The  wisdom granted t o Solomon  by God becom es fully evident w hen the k ing sits in judgmen t. One day two harlots each claim to be mother  of the s ame baby  . Solomon's decision seem s utterly cruel  he says that the child should be cut in  two so that each woman recei ves half. Solomon can now determ ine who   the rea l mother is from her r eact ion she  wil l not  allow her child to be harmed. Solo mon hands the child back to it s true mothe r amid cheers of approva  l. One of the most im portant ta  sks handed d  own to Solomon by h is fat  her David is building the gr eat Temple to  house t he Ark of th e Covenant.  It has to b e larger and more magnifice  nt than all other temp les in  the world, and Solomon  now sets about fulfilling his father's wish. He places Jeroboam in c  harge of  the I sraelite wo rkers as chief overseer. S even years later, the work is compl  eted. The expensive constructio n materi als h  ave been  brought fr  om f ar-off l ands, and the people of Israel have paid exceedingly high taxes wi thout co  mplaint in order to fina nce the construction  work. The Ark of the Covena nt can n ow f inally be taken t o the Temple in a triumphant p rocession. After so  many y ears o  f wan dering, the Israelites ' mo st sacred possession now has a fixed  home o f it s own. People str eam to Jeru salem from across the entir e country  to celebra te the great day. Abishag  , now married, comes too and brings her famil  y. Sol omon has decided to  mingle   among t he pe ople in disguise, and he and Abishag are overjoyed when  they accidentally meet ag ain after so ma ny years. The Temple makes J erusal em and it s king famous throug hout the world. Even the d ark-sk inned Queen of Sheba se ts off with a large retinue to visit  the wis  e and  cultiva ted Solomon and admire his magnificent city.  The admira tion turns out to  be mutual Sol omon, captivated  by her b  eauty, falls  deep ly in love with her. The two of them have a child, Menelik, b ut one day the Que en of Sheba decides to leave. She  does not w ant Meneli k to be  deprive d of the reg al dignity  awaiting him i n his home country.  Solomon sta ys behind, w ith a heavy he art. The king has now achieved everything  he set h is hear t on, but with th e pas  sing of the  year  s the wise Solomon gr adual ly becomes a  melancholy, skeptical old man who regul arly questions his very existence. M aterial things  see m to  represent the  only reali ty for him. He als o re  fuses to adopt any ki  nd of stea dy poli  cy, especi  ally in religiou s matters. With his for eign wives, Solomon  sacrifices to fore ign gods, and this incurs the wrath of the priestho od. The loyal Jeroboam  appea  ls to his king's conscie nce, bu t to  no avail. During one of Solomon's sorties in  disguise am ong his people , a si mple farm er remi nds him of the f irst of the  Ten Comm andments revealed by the Lord to Mose  s You shall have no other gods before me. At another decisiv  e moment, God Himsel f speaks to Solomon and announ ces the pu nishment for  his si nfulness the kingdom  will collapse a fter Solomon's deat h. The k ing has gr own old a nd weary. He has lost touch   with the people of Israel , who are sufferin g from heavy taxation and forced l abor. Solomo n has treated his long-standing companion Jeroboam, to w hom he  entrusted the administration of th e no rthern tribes, with murderous  anger eve r since   a proph et predict ed the division of the kingdom to him. The k ing no long  er has  the str  ength to change things -- he just   leaves them as they are . The consequences of this become clea r shortly after hi s death.   Solomon's son a  nd success or Rehoboam treats the country's leader  s with arr ogance, and provok es t he divisi on of the kingdom into two  parts the  only tri be still loyal to him is  that of  Judah, wh ile all the  others unit e under Jer oboam.
