David, now an ol d man, is st ill ki  ng of Israel. A  mong hi s sons, t he a mbitious A  donijah  and the cl ever Solo mon. The two youn g men are fierce ri vals , since  both are prospect ive heirs to the  throne and only one can be successful. During a hunti ng expedition, A donijah chal lenges his younger bro ther Sol  omon to a cha riot rac  e. While Solomo  n, though brave, s till retains a modicum o f cauti on, the  dared evil Adonij ah is eager to win at all cost  s -- and lo ses c ontrol of hi s chariot. S olomon t akes the ser ious ly injured Adonijah back to Jeru  salem.  On the wa y there they meet the attractiv e Abishag, who despite her youth is versed in the  use of healing herbs. S he actually succe eds in helping t  he prince . Adonijah f alls in love with Abishag -- bu t Baths heba arranges things so  that  she works for David, hoping  that h   er youth, her beauty and her heali  ng pow ers  will soothe the old  king's suffering. Several me mbers of the influentia l priest hood and  also the r espe cted army general Joab, who  served Davi d loyally  for m any y ears, su  pport Adonijah's c laim to the t hrone-- even though D avid has still not made any  decision with reg ard   to a potential s uccessor. Solomon knows  that he has to  act quickly  and decisively if he is to se cure his own power. He has his  brother Adonijah and the latter' s closest associat  e Joab e xecuted. A fter this radical de cision,  Solomon wi thdra  ws to pr  esen t sacrifices. I n a dream the Lord appear s to him and  grants him the fulfillment of a  wish, whatever it may be. Solomon merely asks for wis dom -- in o rder to become a  good ruler a nd judge. War with Egypt is looming. To ar m his king dom against t he territ orial ambiti ons of its powerful  neig hbors, Solom on not only  introduces several r eforms but also decides to marry the d  aughter o f the pharaoh. The Egyptian p  rincess does not re main Solomon's only wife, however as time goes b y the ki ng marries numerous   noble wom en from many dif fere nt countries for polit ical  and econo mic reasons. In this  way he preserves peace for his people, and create s great prosperity. By al lowing the w omen to continue practicing the ir domes tic customs  and religi  ous rituals in Jerusalem as well, h  e comes into regular conflict with the  priesthood, who   see the fo reign re ligion s as endangering Israel's sole covenant with the  Lord. The wisdom granted to Solo mon by God becomes fully   evident when   the  king sits i n judgm ent. One day  two ha rlots each claim t o be mother of the sam  e baby. Solomon's  decision seems  utterly c ruel he says that the child shou ld be cu t in two so that each woman receives half. Solomon can now de termine who the real moth er is fr  om her reacti  on she  will not a llow her child to be harmed. Solomon hands the child back to  its true  mother amid cheers of a pproval. One of the most important task s handed dow n to Solom on by his fath er David is   building the gr eat Tem  ple to  house the Ark of the C ovenant. It has t o be l arger  and  more magni ficent than all o ther t emples i n the world , and Solomon now sets about  fulfilling his f ather's wish. He places Jeroboam in charge of the Israeli te workers a s chief overseer. Seve  n years later, the wor k is completed. The expens ive cons truction materi als have be en brou ght fro  m far-off lands, and t he people of  Israel have paid exceedingly hig h taxes   without complain t in orde r to finance the construction work.  The Ark of the Covenant can now finally   be taken to the Temple in a triumph ant procession . After so many year s of wandering, the Israelites' mo st sacred possession now has a fixed home of its own.  People stre  am to Jerusa lem from across  the entire   country t o cele  brate the great  day. Abisha g, now married, comes too and  brings her f amily. Solomon has decided to mingle among the people  in disgu ise, and he and Abishag  are overjoyed when they ac cidentally meet ag ain aft er so ma ny year s. The Temple makes Jerus  alem and  its king famous throug hout t he world . Even the dark-ski nned Queen o f Sheba sets  off with a large retinue to visit the wise and culti vated Solomon and admire his magn ifice nt city. The  admira tion turns out to   be mutual Solomon, captivate d by her bea uty, falls  deeply in love with her. Th e two of them  have a chil d, Menelik, but one day the Queen o f Sheba d  ecides to leave. She does not wa nt Meneli k to be d eprive d of the reg  al di gnity awaiting him in his home count ry. Solomon stays behind, with a h eavy hear  t. The king has now achiev ed ever ything he set his heart on, but  with the passi ng of the years  the wise Solomon gradual ly becomes a melanch oly, skeptical  old man who regularly questions his very exis tenc e. M aterial things seem to represent the only reality for   him. H e also refuses t o adopt any kind of steady  policy, especial ly in religious matt ers. W ith his foreig n wives, So lomon sacrifices to fo reign go ds, an d this incurs the wrath of the pri   esthood . The loyal Je roboa m appeals to  his king's conscience, but to no  avail. During one o  f Solomon's  sorties in disguise among  his peop  le, a simple farme r reminds  him of   the first of the Ten Commandments rev ealed b y the Lord to Moses You shall h ave no other god s before me. At an other deci  sive m oment, God  Himse lf speaks to So lomon and announces t he punishment for his sinful ness the ki ngdom   will collapse after Solomon's  death.  The ki ng h as grown old a nd w  eary. He  has lost touch with the people of Israel, who are suffering from he avy taxation  and forced lab or. S olomon has treated his long-standing companion Jeroboa m, to whom he entrusted the adminis tration of the nor thern tribes, with murderous anger ever since a prophet predicted the divis ion of the kingdom to hi m. The k ing no longer has the  strength t o change  things -- he just leaves them as they  are. Th e consequences  of this become clear short ly a fter his death. Solomon' s son and s uccessor R ehoboam treats  the country 's leaders with arrogance , and provokes t he division of the kingdom into two parts the  only  tribe  still loyal to him is t hat of Ju dah, while all the others unite under Jeroboam.
