The D oll is an adaptation of the nove l, The Doll (nov el) by Bolesław Pru s, w hich is regarded by many as one of the finest Polish novels ever written an d, along wi th Pharaoh (novel) , made Bolesław Prus a potentia l candidate for the Nobel Prize in liter ature. The influence of Émile Zola is evident, and some have compared the novel t o Mad ame Bovary by Gustave F laub ert; both were P rus's contemporaries. The movie, however, may be m ore compared to Ste ndhal's Le Rouge et le Noir, (The Red an d the Black). The Doll constitutes a panorama of life in Warsaw between 1878 and 1879, and at the same time is a subtle st ory of three generations of P olish idealists , the ir ps ychologic al complicatio ns, their involveme nt in the history of the nineteenth century, social dramas, moral problems and the experience of tragic existence. At the same time this story describes the disintegration of social relationshi ps and the growing separation o f a society wh ose ari stocratic elite spreads th e mo dels of vanity and idleness. In t he bad air of a b ackwar d country, anti-Semitic ideas ar e born, valuable individuals meet ob stacle s on their way, and scound rels are successful. This poetic love story follows a nouveau riche merchant, St anislaw Wokulski, throug h a series o f trials and tribulations o ccasioned by his ob sessiv e passion for an aristocratic b eauty, Iza bela Lecka, played by the famous Po lish actress, Beata Tyszkiewicz. Plot As a descendant of an impoverished Polish noble family, y oung Wokulski is for ced to work as a waiter at Hopf er's, a Warsaw restaurant, while dreaming of a l ife in scienc e. After taking part in the fai led 1863 Uprising against Tsarist Russia, h e is sentenced to exi le in Siberia. On eventual return t o Wa rsaw, h e becomes a salesman at Min cel's hab erdashery . Ma rrying the lat e own er's widow (w ho eventually dies), h e comes into money and uses it t o set up a part nership wit h a Russian merc hant he had met while in exi le. The two merchants go to Bulgaria during the Russo-Turkis h War of 1877- 78, and Wokulski makes a fortune supplying the Russian Army. T he en terprising Wokulski now proves a roman tic at he art, falling in love with Izabela , daughter of the vacuou s, bankrupt arist ocrat, Tom asz Łęcki . In his quest to win Izab ela, W okulsk i be gins freq uenting th eatres and ari stocratic salons; and t o help her f inancially dist ressed fathe r, founds a c ompany and sets the a ristocrats up as shareholders in h is business.The indolence of these aristocrats, who s ecure with t heir pensi ons, are too lazy to unde rtake new business risks, frustrates Wokulski. His ability to make money is respecte d but hi s lack of fam ily a nd social rank is cond escended to. Be cause of his help (in secr et) to Izab ela's impec unious bu t influential fat her, the gi rl becomes aware of hi s affection.
