The Doll i s an adaptation of the novel, The Dol l (novel) by Bole sław Prus, whic h is reg arded by many as one of the fines t Poli sh novels ev er w ritten and , along with Pharao h (nove l), made Bole sław Prus a potential candidate for the Nobel Prize in lit erature. The inf luence of Émile Zola is evident, and some have com pared the novel to Madame Bov ary by G ustave Flaubert; both were Prus's contemporaries. The movie, however, may be mo re compared to Ste ndhal's Le Rouge et le Noir, (The R ed and the Black). Th e Doll constitutes a panorama of life in Warsaw between 18 78 and 1879, a nd at the same t ime is a subtle story o f three generations of Polish idealists, t heir psychological complications , their i nvolvement in the histo ry of the ninete enth century, soci al dramas, moral problems and the experi ence of tragic existence. At the sa me time this story describes the di sint egration of social relationships and the growing separ ation of a society whose arist ocratic elite spreads the models of vanity and id leness. This poetic love story follows a nouveau riche merchan t, Stanislaw Wokulski, through a s erie s of trials and trib ulations occa sioned by his ob sessive passion for an ari stocrat ic beauty, Izabela Lecka, played by th e famous P olish actress, Beata Tyszkiewicz . Plot As a descendant of an impoveri shed Poli sh noble family, young W okulski is forced to w ork as a waiter a t Ho pfer's, a Warsaw restaurant, while d reaming of a life in sc ience. After taki ng part in the failed 1863 Uprising against Tsarist Russia, he is sentenced to exile in Siberia. On eventual return to Warsaw, he become s a salesman at Mincel's haberd ashery. Marrying th e late owner's widow ( who eventuall y dies), he comes into money and uses it to set u p a partnershi p with a Russian merch ant h e had met while i n exile. The two m erchants go to Bulgaria d uring the Russo- Turkish War of 1877-78, and Wokul ski makes a fortune su pplying the Russian Army. The ente rprising Wokulski now proves a roma ntic at hea rt, falling in love with Izabela, daughter of the vacuous, bankrupt aristo crat, Toma sz Łęcki . In h is quest to win Izabela, Wokuls ki begi ns frequen ting theatres and aristocratic salons; and to help her financ ially di stressed father, founds a company and se ts the aris tocrats up as shareholde rs in his bu siness. The ind olence of these a ristocrat s, who secure with their pensions, are too l azy to unde rtake new business risks, frustr ates Wokul ski. His abi lity to make money is respected but his lac k of family and socia l rank is conde scended to.
