John Kent ( Randolph Scott), a former star foo tball player at Harvard, g oes to Paris with hi s friend Huck Haines (Fred Astaire) and the latter's dance ba nd, the Wabash Indianian s. W hile ther e, he meets her chi ef a ssis tant (and secretly the head designer), Stepha nie (Ir ene Dunne ). John is q uickly sm itten with her. Meanwhile, Hu ck un expecte dly stumbles u pon someone he knows very well. Cou ntess Scharwenka, a temperamental c ustomer at Roberta's, turns out t o be his hometown sweetheart Liz zie Gatz (Ginger Rogers). She gets Huck's ba nd an enga gement at t he nightclub where she is a featu red e ntertainer . Two things trouble John. One is Lad islaw (Victor Varconi), the han dsome Russian deposed prince a nd doorman who se ems too intere sted in Stephanie. The other is the memo ry of So phie (Clair e Dodd), the snobbish, conce ited girl friend he le ft behind af ter a qua rrel over his lack of sophistication an d polish. When Aunt Minnie dies unexpectedly without leavi ng a will, John inher its the shop. Knowing nothing about women's fashion and that his aunt intended for Stephanie to inherit the b usiness, he persuades Stephanie to remain as his p artner. Correspo ndents flock to hear what a foo tball player has to sa y about feminine fash ions. Huck gives the answers , making a lot of weird statements about the inno vati ons John is plannin g to introduce. Sophie arrives in Pa ris, attracted by John's goo d fortune. She enter s the shop, looki ng for a dress, but is dissa tisfied with everything Stephanie shows her. Hu ck persuades her t o choose a gown t hat John had ordered discarded as to o vulg ar. When John sees h er in it, th ey quarrel for the final time. John reproaches Stepha nie for selling Sophie t he gown. Terribly hurt, Steph anie quits the shop. W ith Roberta's pu tting on a fa shion show in a week, Huck take s over the design work, with predictably bad result s. W hen Stephanie sees his awful creati ons, she is p ersuaded to return to save Robert a's repu tation. The show is a tri umph , helped by the entertaining of Hu ck, Co untess Scharwe nka, and the band. When sh e informs hi m that Ladi slaw is mere ly her cous in and that the title has been hers since birth, the lovers a re reunited.
