Due to some com mon interests between German a nd Russian aristocracy ( the Russia ns even had ari stocrats in their pas t not t o mention they had an Empress calle d Ca therine the Great , as great as this German count's heiresses… ), it is not strange that this Teut onic count has unders tood and even enjoyed Herr S. M. Eisenstein' s St aroye I Novoye. It is not very usual that for the ari stoc racy to enj oy Bolshe vist films full of proletaria n demands that put private property at risk or as it happens in this case , a fil m about the Communist Party's policy on t he subject of the col lectivization of the Soviet agricu lture. Normal ly t his would be perfect gibberish for th is German c ount, but thanks to H err Eisenst ein 's greatness and director ial tal ent, the ha rdships of the he roine of t he film, Dame Mar fa ( Dame Ma rfa Lapkina ) brea ched even the thick aristoc ratic Schloss wall s. And that 's one of the first r emar kable aspects of th is oeuvre; in spite of the political subject of the film, the powerful images and l yricism ( astonishing and beautiful shot composit ions ), especially during the first part of the movie, preserve t he artistic merits entirely while ser ving a propaga nda purpose. The second remar kable aspect of the film is th e dich otomy betw een th e old and new, the fight to imp rove the lot of Dame Marfa and her countrymen. Ther e are man y discussio ns because it is not easy even in Rus sia to change ancient and co nservative customs. There are superb m etaphor s and socia l criticism ( illit eracy, bureaucr acy, religio sity ) which pe rfectly fit th e film , and last but not least, Staroye I No voye, is a kind of archa ic documentary about ancient customs es tablished deep ly in old Russia, those ones that ou r heroine must fight against. An d there is also a lot ab out agriculture ( v ery enlight ening for this German count), especially abo ut harvesting and how to fatten Russian cows or pigs ( literal ly, no pun h ere… ). Herr Eisenstein had to bear during the l ast era of his film career, unbel ievable c ensorship and muti lation o f his work, a s happens with Staroye I Novo ye. The film was reedit ed and Eisenstein accused of sympathizing with Trostk y's policies but fortunately the f ilm was restored and showed by th e German-frenchifi ed t.v. ch annel ARTE, nat ürlich! , includi ng an evocative music score by Herr Taras Buj ewski, that fi ts super bly Herr Eisenstein primal artistic in terests .
