The second re markab le aspect of the film is the d ichotomy between the old and new, the fight to impro ve the lo t of Dam e Marfa and her coun trymen. There are superb metaphors and soc ial c riticism ( illiter acy, bureaucracy, religiosity ) which pe rfectly fit the fil m, an d last but not least , Sta roye I No voye, is a kind of archaic doc umentary about ancient cust oms established deeply in old Ru ssia, those ones that our heroine must fight a gainst. And there is also a lot about agri culture ( very enlighte ning for this German count), especiall y about harvesting a nd how to fatten Russian cows or pigs ( l iterally, no pun here… ). Herr Eisenst ein had to bear during the last era of his film career, unb elievab le censorship and mutilation of his work, as happen s with Star oye I Novoye.
