Out of th e fifties 'B' Scienc e-Fiction monster movies, this ea sily ranks as the best. It's most notab le as the film that AL IEN is an unaccredited remake of, thus giving it a certai n historical significanc e. The intriguing plot is about th e rescue of the onl y mar ooned survivor (Col. C arruthers) of an ill-fated expedition to Mars. The authorities, pig-head ed as usual, falsely assume t hat he mu rdered his fellow crew members , so that he'd have m ore prov isions to su rvive; hence he is being brought back to Earth to face co urt-martial for murder. (T here is also a some what interes ting plot rever sal here Most movies of this natur e usually beg in with the ship le aving E arth, enrou te to its ot herworld destination, while, in this case, the story i s believed finished, and begins as th e cha racters take -off from the other pl anet, return ing to Earth). As the rescue ship is lea ving M ars, a lurk ing, ominou s shad ow is seen in the lower compartm ent. ( A frightening, at mospheric mome nt, accomplished through sheer ec onomy and si mplicity). Carru thers ins ists of his innocence to his fellow captors, claiming that his ori ginal crew mates were slaughtered by a hostile, unseen presen ce on the d esolute red pl anet, bu t three -guesses a s to their reaction to his unus ual pl ea. Naturally, he can't prove it, and 50's s pace authoriti es wer e not very a lien conscienc e at the t ime. ( As a side -thought, unseen men ace may remind you of that highly original B LAIR WITCH ). As everyone sacks out, a haple ss supportin g charactor whose name is at the bottom of the casting li st (g uess what will happen to him) hears somethi ng in the lower co mpartment. Despite y our futile d on't go down th ere, you jerk! pleas, he does just that, and i s app ropriately killed (m ore like tho roughly obliterated) by the shadowy figure with insatiable blood lust on its m ind. In the vict im's ca se, derelict ion of duty and s heer cowardliness wo uld have been the wise decision. Th e scene i s actually w ell-direc ted (for a change) and dev elops much suspense, as the en tire film surprisingly does. The cre w finally catches on that they have an unwanted ship crasher on board, and try every possi ble means at their disposal t o eli minate it, but the unk nown creature seems to copp ing an anti-de ath att itude. Proving to be an even more clever, worthy adversary, 'IT!' also hi des out in t he ventilation shafts of the shi p (now that should r ing a bell). Cahn's forceful directi on generates consider able tension as the malevolent sto waway works its w ay up from one level of the confined ship to the next, event ually leav ing the remaining ch aracters t rapped at the top. Th e movie's s uspense is blunt and right to the point IT!' h as to kill them or starve, hence th ey have to kill IT! or die. No thing li ke those no two way s about it choices. Rent it, or check for it on cab le if you wish to know the outcome. For a low-bud get quick ie, IT! is quite impressive and memorable. The dreaded sense o f clau stroph obic tensi on, rendering the characters' he lpless entrapment, is highly effe ctive. This is a production in which the limited budget a nd small set s actually w ork in favor of the plot' s scary amb ience. The black white photography (Yes, it's on e of those! ) helps to enhance its dark, creepy mood, and the sense of appreh ension is quite high. (Modern day color fr eaks never seem to t ake that into con sideration). The plot is also s omewhat cynical ly ironic If the creatur e hadn't stow ed away on the ship, Carruther s would have most l ikely been found guilty of the charges against him. The intelligent sc ript (see wh at I m ean a bout rarei ty) was penned by note d Sci ence-Fictio n author Jerome Bixb y (r emember Tw ilight Zone's It's a Good Life) The pict ure's t aut editing elimina tes any extran eous dross . (ALI EN tended to drag in its first hour wi th its sophomoric dialo gue, and w hy did it have to incl ude that s tupid and ultimately co unter -produ ctive sub-plot of Ash being a robot, and fu rther dragging the story down to another big bad conspiracy c liche UNN ECESSA RY!!!) Dire ctor Cahn astutely keeps the rubber-suit ed monster off-screen and in the shadows th rough-out most o f the proceedi ngs, keeping your paranoid imaginat ion on con stant al ert. Unf ortunately, perhaps at the studio's com mercial insistance, it is a littl e over-re vealed at the clima x, but I have n't claimed this to be the p erfect mas terpiece. The performances, thoug h nothing award-winning, are neverthe less coo l enough so that one be comes sincerely concerne d as to thei r fates. Not many movies in recen t times ever come cl ose to achieving that. They can be over-produced from he re to eterni ty, a nd usual ly only su cceed i n being glor iously annoying. This film's stor y is not really t otally original (what is), for it is based on A.E. Van Vogt's VOYAGE OF THE SPACE BEAG LE. A ll ALIEN fana tics sho uld track down an old used copy to se e whe re the initial in fluence came from. As long as you're not craving another CGI wind-ding, you may fi nd it worthwhile. Just don' t expect the women to be Ripley precursors . This was still the sock-kn itting fif ties, sad to say. ”
