Umberto Lenzi is undo ubtedly the king of Italian crime movies, but unfortu nately; Syn dicate Sadists is not th e best exam ples of hi s work in this ge nre. Lenzi 's crim e flicks tend to be a cut above the rest because he makes films based on stories with a point, and t hey don't l ack direc tion; but th is film fe els a bit too wayward t o fully fit wit h th e rest of his stuff. The film takes obvious influence from Sergio Leone's landmark wester n 'A Fi stfu l of Doll ars' ( which in turn, took influence from Akira Kuros awa's land mark samur ai flick Yojimbo), in that it features two w arring families and a strong ch aracter at the centre. The cri me that Lenzi focuse s on is kidnapping, and we centre on a character called 'Rambo'. Rambo is dragged into the war between the two families af ter his brother i s killed becaus e of it. Rambo u ses his brai ns and br awn to pit the t wo families against one another, in the hope o f gain ing rev enge for his bro ther's dea th, res cuing a you ng bo y that the y've kidnapped , and ultimately letting the two sides destro y one anothe r. The film's biggest asset is u ndoubtedl y Tomas Mil ian. Mi lian was put to great use by Lenz i in almost all of his crime thrillers. Th e range of characters he has played for Lenzi i s immense, and this one is easi ly one of the coolest. The ch aracter is call ed Ram bo, which immediately sprang to mind the popular Sylvester Stallone c haracter - bu t fo r once, the Ital ians act ually hav en't stolen this name as Syndicate Sadists was release d first! As usual, t he film i s wickedly ent ertaining, as we get to watc h Milian get himse lf involved in the usual arr ay of car chases, sho otouts and brawls. Lenzi h as go t him r iding a motorbike this time round, and every scene featuring it and Milian is a real sta ndou t! However, the film often feels like it d oesn't really have anywhere to go, and this mea ns that the running time is stretche d out mo re t han it sh ould be. Com pared to the crime films of other Italia n directors, Syndicate Sadists is mo re than ab ove average; but in relati on to Lenzi crim e flicks such as Almost Hum an and Th e Cynic, The Rat and The Fi st - it doesn't stand tall as one of Lenzi's b est.
