Umberto Len zi is undou btedly the king o f Italian crime movies, but unf ortunately; Syndica te Sadists is not the b est examples of his work in t his genr e. Len zi's cr ime flicks tend to be a cut above the rest because he makes fi lms based on stories with a poi nt, an d they don't lack direction; but this film feels a bit t oo wayward t o ful ly fit wit h the re st of his stuff. The film takes obvious influ ence from Sergio Leone's land mark wes tern 'A Fistful of Dollars' (which in turn, too k influence from Akir a Kurosawa's l andma rk samura i flick Yoji mbo), in that it features two wa rring famili es and a strong character at the centre. The crime that Le nzi focuses on is kid napping, and we centr e on a ch aracte r called ' Rambo'. Rambo is dragg ed into the war between the two families after his brother is ki lled because of it. R ambo uses his brains and brawn to pit the two families against one ano ther, in th e hope of gaining revenge for his brother' s de ath, rescuing a young boy that they' ve kidnapped, and ultimately lett ing the two sides destro y one another. The film 's biggest as set i s undoubted ly Tomas Milian. Milian was put to great use by Lenzi in almost al l of his crime thri llers. T he range of characters he h as played for Le nzi is imm ense, and this one is easily one of the coolest . The charac ter is called Rambo, which immed iately spra ng t o mind the popular S ylvester Stallone character - but for o nce, the Ital ians actua lly haven't stolen this n ame as Syndicate Sa dist s was released first! As usual, the film is wickedly entertaining, as we ge t to watch M ilian get hims elf involved i n the usual array of car chas es, s hootouts and braw ls. Lenzi has got him riding a motorbike this time r ound, and e very scene featuring i t and Milian is a real standout! However , the fi lm often feels like it do esn't really have anywher e to go, and thi s means that the runn ing time is stretche d out more than it should be. Co mpared to the crime films of other Italian directors, Syndicate Sadists is more tha n above a verage; b ut in relation to Lenzi cri me fli cks such as Almost Hu man and T he Cynic, The Rat and T he Fist - it doesn't stand tall as one of Lenzi's best .
