Deserves recogni tion as a n interesting misunderstanding of the hallucination gen eration, 20 January 2007 Author Timot hyFarrell from Worc ester, MA Wi ld in the S treets com es from the same school of fi lm making that spawned other attempts to connect to the co untercult ure such as Skid oo and Candy. The difference between this and the aforementio ned films is that Wild in the S treets is reasona bly c lever and well-made. It isn't sympathetic to the countercultu re and will likely of fend th ose with fond memories of t he time. Su rprisingl y, it wa s a big hit w hen released and appealed to th e youth whom it ridicu led so much. Un like T he Trip and Psych-Out (two other AI P films), its not an accu rate r epresentation of the movement at all. However it d oes work as social satire. T he direction by Barr y Shear is g ood and makes innova tive use of split screen photogr aphy. Plus, he keeps everything moving at a quick pace. In its funny moments, the fil m works we ll. In its a ttemp ts at dram a, its h elplessly dated and just as fun ny as the humorous momen ts. Christopher Jone s underplays his ro le and Shelly W inters o veracts. Hal Holbrook offers the best perfo rmance and Diane Varsi achieves t he right not e of gr ooviness. The script b y Robert Thom has its momen ts, especially the ending (easily the mo st ingenio us part of the film). Wild in the Streets isn't perfect, but deserves recogn ition as an inter esting misunderstan ding of the hallucinatio n generation. Those into this ki nd of kitsch will enjoy it the most. I'd rather watch The Trip or Psych-Out however.
