The difference between this and th e afor ementione d films is that Wild in the Street s is reasonably clev er and well-m ade. It isn't sympathetic to the counterculture and will likel y offend th ose with f ond me mories of the t ime. Su rprisingly, it was a big h it when released and appealed to the youth whom it ridiculed so m uch. Unli ke The Trip and Psych-Out (two other AIP films), its not an accurate represen tation of t he movement at all. Howev er it does w ork as social satire. The dire ction by Bar ry Shear is good and makes innovative use o f split screen phot ography. P lus, he keeps everything moving a t a qu ick pace. In its funny moments, the f ilm work s well. In its attempts at drama, its helpless ly dated and just as funny as the humorou s moments. C hristopher Jones underplay s his role and Shelly Winters overacts. Hal Holbr ook offers the best performance and Diane Varsi ac hieves th e right n ote of grooviness. The script by Robert Thom has its moments, espe cially the ending (eas ily the most ingeni ous part of the film). Wild in th e Streets isn 't perfect, but deserv es recognition as an intere sting misundersta nding of the hallucin ation ge neration. Those into thi s kind of kit sch w ill enjoy it the most.
