Marg Duffield (Lee Rem ick) is the Mai ne wife of Al (Jos eph Sommer) whose daughter Peg (Marlee Matlin) is deaf. Peg's husband is killed in a car accident on the way to visit the Mai ne house, an d the Duf field's take in Peg's six year old daughter, Lis a, while Peg reco vers. Since Lisa is a speaking child, Marg thi nks of her the way she wanted Peg to be, and seeks guardian cus tody. Rem ick's role is secondary to M atlin's, though she is presented as a tragic figure, par ticular ly as A l refuses t o help her plan t o gain Lisa. Pe g's deafness is said t o be from a chil dhood case of spinal meningitis, and the t eleplay by Louisa Burns-Bisogno, with story by Louisa and Tom Bis ogno, red uces Remick to a textbook m other w ho is self-hating from guilt and therefore cannot love her own d aughter. In a memora ble scene, Peg angrily signs her exit to Marg, since Marg has refused to l earn sign l anguage, though Peg has learned to speak f or her mothe r. The t reatment uses the Tennesee Williams p lay, The Glass Menage rie, for t herapy, to help Peg overcome h er grief and also M arg ` lose her unico rn horn' and embrace her daughter. Whilst Peg choosing to act in this play may s eem an odd choice for someone gr ieving, what is mor e noticable is that Matlin is far too more glamourous to be believa ble as Lau ra. The Bisogno's includ e Michael O'Keefe as Dan, Peg's decease d husband' s best friend and direct or of Actors Theatre for the Deaf, to offer Peg a new romantic int erest, and thankfu lly s he rebukes his prote stations of love. Althoug h his opin ion may be influenced by his `crush', Dan tell s Peg that being di fferent is better than being n ormal, since the normal ones are as `common as weeds'. This phil osophy reads as rather Nietzsch ean, on the level of artists not being restricted to the common mor al c ode. Director Karen Arthur eit her has thos e sign ing also sp eaking or those sign ing bein g translated for the audience, though in one sc ene th e soun d of lapping waves dr owns out the dialogue b etween Dan and Peg.
