Marg Duffi eld (Lee Remick) is the Maine wife of Al ( Joseph Somm er) whose da ughter P eg ( Marl ee Matlin) is deaf. Peg's husband is k illed in a car accident on the wa y to visit the Maine hou se, and the Duffield's take in Peg's six y ear old daughter, Lisa, while P eg recovers. Since Lisa is a speaking child, Marg thinks of her the way she wanted Peg to be, and seeks gu ardian cust ody. Re mick's role is secondary to M atlin's, thoug h she is presented as a tragic figure, pa rticularly as A l re fuses t o help her plan to gain Lisa. Peg's de afness i s said t o be from a chi ldhood case of s pinal meningitis, and the telepla y by Louisa Bur ns-Bisogn o, with s tory by Louis a and Tom B isogno, reduces Remick to a textbook mot her who is self-hating from guilt and therefore cannot love her own daughter. In a memorable scene, Peg angrily signs her exit to Mar g, since Marg has refused to learn s ign language, thou gh Peg has learned to speak for her mother. Whilst Peg ch oosing to act in th is play may seem an odd choice for someon e grievi ng, what is mor e noticable is that Ma tlin is far too mo re gla mourous to be be lievable as Laura. The Bis ogno's inc lude Mic hael O'Keefe as Dan, Pe g's deceased husban d's best friend and director of Actor s Theatre for the Deaf, to offer Peg a new rom antic interest, an d thankfully she rebukes hi s protesta tion s of love. Although his opinion may b e influenced by his `crush', D an tells Peg that being dif ferent is b etter than being normal, since the no rmal ones are a s `comm on as we eds'. This philosophy read s as rather Nie tzsc hean , on the l evel of artists not being res tric ted to the common moral code.
