After his initial work with Uh er, Grecner made his mark as a proponen t of the so-ca lled intellectual film, the antith esis of t he sociologically, or rather, socially criti cal film. Gre cner's great role model was Alan Resnais, a you ng French filmmaker who sought to introduce Slovakia to t he idea of film as a labyrinth in which me anings are creat ed not by stor ies, but by complex configurat ions of dialogue, shots, and various layers of time, thus differ entiating f ilm from both li terature a nd theater. In Dragon Returns―the story of a solitary h ero who is n eeded by villagers liv ing fa r in the mo untains, b ut who is reject ed by them at the sam e time because of his d etachment―Grecner brought the trad ition of lyricized prose to life through a whole series o f formal aesthetic t echniques.
