In the time of Counter-Reformation, a miller and his son come under i nvestigation by a pr iest o f the Inqu isition , when rumors spre ad that th eir prosperity comes from working with the Dev il. The Devil's Trap is a film directed by Františ ek Vláil, based on a novel by Alfréd Techni k, adapt ed by František A. Dvor ák an d Miloš Kratochvíl . It was the firs t of three historical dramas that Vláil made du ring the Czech N ew Wave (te chnically he isn't really a part of the New W ave, however these films were made during the same era of arti stic freedom), prece ding his more well known Market a Lazarová ( 1967) and Valley of the Bees (1968). Set i n the late 16th Ce ntury during the Catholic Refor mation, in th e Moravian Karst , situate d in what is now the Eastern Czech Republi c, it tells the tale of a m iller (V ítezsl av Ve jrazka), and his son Jan (Vít Olmer), who com e under suspicion and are in vestigate d by a Jesuit priest of the I nquisition (Miroslav Mac háchek), when rumors of witchcraft a re spread by the local regent (Cest mír Randa), who is jealous of the miller's p rosperity and degree of respect among the local popu lace. As expected from Vl áil, this film is a stunning e xperience a ll the w ay through. From the opening shot, an ominous manipulation of perspecti ve with a close up of a mangled figure of Christ dominating the foreground against a tiny fi gure in black walking along the horizo n, to the breathtaki ng confron tational finale inside the vas t stalacti te filled Karst caverns, it is a wonderful display of visual ma stery. Maybe not quite as i mpressive as Ma rketa Lazarová, but still full of astonishing imager y. As seen from unique angles an d distinct points of view which hi ghli ght th e di rector's r emarkable sens e of awareness of frami ng, mo tion, an d positioning on the emotion al and drama tic tone of the scene. The most memorab le being a repea ted shot where the camera is suspended and launched w ith speed through the ai r toward s the miller 's door . The story h ere is a simple one an d I would say more accessible than his l ater work s. With a co nventi onal stru cture empha sized as much by its plot and characters, than by its expressionis tic ci nematogr aphy or authentic histori cal detail. The events play out without much s urpri se, and th ere is a strong underlying, almost supernatural, myst erious aspect that is left unreso lved, in f act barely explored, wh ich is slightly dis appointi ng, but o nly because it's so fascin ating that I wish there was more. Acting is great all aroun d. Particularly the vi llai ns Miroslav Macháchek as the priest, casting a sinister a nd imposing shadow wherever he goes, and C estmír Randa as the weasel like re gent behind a ll the persecution. While Vít Olme r bring s a charism atic leading man pr esence in his ro le as the miller's son Jan, in love with the lovely orphan gi rl Martina (Karla Chadimová), who becomes a dangerous object of rivalry between Jan and othe r young men of the village . The fil m also featur es the ev ocative m usic of Zdenk Liška (perhaps the mo st prolific composer o f the Czech New Wave). In this h is second of e leven collaborations wit h Vláil, his compositions are used sparingly, but t o great eff ect, complimenting but never over powering a scene. Th e best ex ample of which can be heard in an amazingly shot celebration and dance se quence a t the end of the second act. The Devil's Trap might not be a masterpiece, but it is still a st rong effort, with a fascinati ng straightforwa rd story and a glorious h istor ical setting captured beautif ully by Vláil's unmistakable v isual prowess. A fine work that would also be the perf ect s tarter pla te to prepa re yourself for th e challenging fe ast of Mar keta Lazarová or The Valley of the Bees. It even has an easy to digest running time.
