In the time of Counter-Reformation, a mill er and his s on come un der i nvestigation b y a priest of the Inquisition, when rumors spread that their pro speri ty comes from working with the Dev il. The Devil's Trap is a f ilm directed by František Vláil, based on a novel b y Alfr éd Techni k, adapted by František A. D vorák and Miloš Kratoc hvíl. It was the firs t of three historical dramas th at Vláil made during the Czech New Wave (t echnical ly he isn't really a part of the New Wave, however these films were made during the same era of artistic fre edom), pr eceding his more well known Marketa Laz arová (1967) and Val ley of the Bees (1968). Set in th e late 16t h Century during the C atholic Reformatio n, in the Mo ravian Kars t, situa ted i n what is no w the Easter n Czech Republic , it tells the tale of a mil ler (Vítezslav Ve jrazka), and his son Jan (Ví t Olmer), who come u nder suspicion an d are investigated b y a Jesuit priest o f the Inquisition (Miroslav Mach áchek), w hen ru mors of witchcraft ar e spread by the loc al re gent (Cestm ír Randa ), who is jealo us of the mil ler's prosp erity a nd degree of respect among the local populace. As expected from Vláil, this fil m is a stun ning exper ienc e all the w ay thro ugh. Fro m the opening shot, an ominous manipulation of perspe ctive with a clos e up o f a mangled figure of Christ dominating the foregr ound agains t a tiny fig ure in bl ack w alking along the horiz on, to the breathtaking confrontational finale inside the vast stalac tite filled Karst caverns, it is a wonderfu l display of visual ma stery. Maybe not quite as impressive as Marketa Laza rová , but still full of as tonish ing imagery. As seen from uniq ue angles and dist inct point s of view which h ighlight the dir ector's r emarkable sense of awareness of framing, motion, and p ositioning on the emotio nal and d rama tic tone of the scene. The most memorable being a repeated shot wher e the camera is suspen ded and launched wit h speed thro ugh the air tow ards the miller's door. T he sto ry her e is a s imple one and I would say more accessi ble tha n hi s lat er w orks . With a conventio nal structure emphasize d as much by its p lot and c haracters, than by its expressionistic c inematography or authentic his torical detail . The eve nts p lay out without much surprise, and there is a str ong un derlying, almost supe rnatural, mysterious aspect tha t is left unresolved , in fact ba rely exp lored , which is s lightly disa ppoin ting, but only because it 's so fascinating that I wish there was mor e. Acting is great all around. Part icularly the villains Miroslav Macháchek as th e priest, cast ing a sinis ter and imposing shadow wherever he goes, and Ce stmír Rand a as the weasel like regent behind all the pers ecution. While Vít Olmer bring s a charism atic leading man presence i n his rol e as the m iller's son Jan, in love with the lovely orphan girl Marti na (Karla Ch adim ová), who be comes a dangerous object of rivalry b etween Jan and o ther young men of the vill age. The film also fea tures the evocative m usic o f Zdenk Liš ka (perhaps the most pr olific composer o f the Cze ch Ne w Wave). In this his second of elev en collaborations wit h Vlái l, hi s compositions are us ed sparingly, bu t to gr eat effect, complimenting but never overpowering a scene. The best example of whi ch can b e heard in a n amazingly shot cel ebration and dance seq uence at the end of the second act. Th e Devil's Trap mi ght not be a maste rpiece, but it is st ill a strong eff ort, with a fascinating straightforward story and a glorious his torical setting captured b eautifully by V láil's unmistakable visual prowess. A fine work that wou ld also be the perfe ct starter plate to prepare yourself for the challenging fea st of Marketa Lazarová or The Vall ey of th e Bees. It even has an easy to d igest running time.
