The subjec t of Da nièle Huil let and Jean-Marie Straub’s De r Tod des Empedokles (The Death of Empedocles, 1987) is the Greek pre-Socratic philosopher Empedo cles (c. 490 BC – 430 BC), who lived in the Greek colony of Agrige ntum in Sicily. His theories are mention ed in several of Pl ato’s dialogues. He mai ntained that all matter is made up of four irreducib le eleme nts w ater, earth, air and fire. A myst ic and a poet, he is consider ed to be the f ounder of classical rhetoric. He is also thought to be the las t Greek phil osoph er to write in verse ; two fragments of h is works su rvive Katharmoi ( Purifications) and Pe ri Phuseôs (On Nature). An advocate of democr acy, he came into conflict wit h hi s fellow cit izens of Agrigentum and, as result, wa s banished with his young disciple, Pausanius. When h e was asked to return, he preferred to commit suicide by throwing himself into th e active volcano at Mo unt Aetna. The German w riter Friedrich Hölderlin wrote two versio ns of Der Tod des Emp edokles in 1798 an d 1800, and a fina l third version in 1 820, all three ultimately u nfinished. They were conce ived as five-act tra gedies and al l three differ in plot. According to Michael Hamburger, H ölderlin ’s Engli sh-language translator, the mai n reason wh y Höl derl in finished no vers ion of the play must be that he remai ned too cl osely identified wit h Empe docles, at the ve ry pe riod in his life when hi s own view of the poet as philosopher, prophet and priest – and as tragi c hero – was subject t o perpetual cr isis and re- examination.
