The subject of Dani èle Huille t and Jean -Mari e Straub’s Der Tod d es Empedokles (The Death of Empedocles, 1987) is the Greek pre-Socratic phi losopher Empedocles (c. 490 BC – 430 BC), who lived in t he G reek colon y of Agrigentum i n Sicily . His the ories ar e mentioned in several of Plato’s dia logue s. He main tained that all matter is made up of four irreducible elements water, earth, air and fire. A mystic and a poet, he is cons idered to be the founder of cla ssical rhe toric. He is also t hought to be the last G reek philosopher to write in v erse; two fragments of his works sur vive K atharmoi (Puri fications) and Peri Phuse ôs (On Nature). A n advocate of democ racy, he came into conflict w ith his fellow citizens of Agrige ntum and, as result, was banished with his young di sciple, Pausan ius. When he was asked to r eturn, he preferred to commit suicide by throwing h imself into the a ctive volcano at Mount Aetna. Th e German writer Fri edrich Höld erlin wrote two v ersions of Der Tod des Emp edokles in 1798 and 1800, and a final third ve rsion in 1820, all three ultima tely unf inished. The y were conceived as five-act tr agedies and all three differ in plo t. Acc ording to Michael Hamburger, Hölderlin’s English-language translator, the main reason why H ölderlin finished no version of the play must b e that he remained too clo sely identified with E mpedocles, at the very period in his life when his own view of the poet as phil osopher , prophet and priest – and as tragic hero – w as subjec t to per petual cri sis and re-exami nation.
