Sixty Glorious Years is an exer cise in the creation o f iconography, b oth for Victoria and its star, Anna Neag le (who subsequen tly bec ame kn own as ' Regal Neagle'). Jus t as Eliza beth I commissioned artists to creat e flatter ing iconic images for public cons umptio n, so thi s fil m performs a simi lar funct ion, for Neagle is mo re beautiful than the real life Victoria. Controversi al events (such as the 'Iri sh p roblem') are omi tted and unpleas ant aspects of Victoria's character (he r petulance, arrogance, favouri tism and 'right to privile ge') ar e glosse d over as endear ing lit tle 'whim s'. Albert acts as a moderating influence when s he g oes too far . The film followed a y ear after the highly successful Victoria the Great (d . Herbert Wilcox, 1 937). Aga in the screenplay is by Miles Malleson an d Robert Vansit tart, and many of the supporting cast (th e cream of acting talent of period) repea t their roles, this time for the col our cameras. This was th e first full length Techn icolor film of ci nematographer Freddi e Young, who cap tures the spe ctacle of royal weddings, grand ball s and opule nt interio rs, with s cenes actually filmed at royal p alace s. Vivid battle scenes, se t in Alexander Korda's empire territory (Sevastopol and the Sudan), rival tho se in The Four Feathers (d. Zolt an Korda 1939). The title music sets the tone a regal choi r sings over a shot of the crown. Elgar's 19 01 'Pomp and Circumstan ce' march is heard du ring the diamond jubilee celebrations and, as Victoria's coff in lies in state , the film conclu des wit h Anthony Collins' stately music accompanied by the text of Rudyar d Kip ling's 'Lest w e for get'. Co mbine d wit h th e em otional appeal of scenes of Victoria connecting w ith her 'ordinary folk' , this is stirring stuff. The film connects with conte mporary events o f 1938. The rele ase of two celeb ratory roya l films was intend ed to boost pub lic affection fo r the mo narchy in t he wa ke of Edward VI II's abdica tion. Angl o-German relations we re another touchy s ubject. Wit h another war on the horizon, influential voices wanted appease ment , and the film coul d be seen to fit that agenda. Victori a herself was of mainly Germa n desc ent, nicknamed 'the grand mother of Eu rope', whil e Albert is a 'good German' , charmingly played by Anton Walbrook as a cul tured, decent man. Six ty Glorious Years now se ems unduly formal and reverential. Had movies exis ted during Vi ctoria's re ign (they only emerged at the end) this might ha ve been the kind of film produced. Unlike Mrs Brown (d. John Madden, 1997), it is all so very 'Victoria n'.
