Sixty Glo rious Year s is an exercise in the creation of iconography, both for Victoria and its st ar, Anna Neagle (who subsequently became known as 'Regal Ne agle'). Just as Elizabeth I com missioned artists to cr eate flattering ic onic images for p ublic consumption, so this film performs a si mila r function, for Neagle is more beautiful than t he real life Vi ctoria . Controversial events (such as the 'Irish p roblem') are omit ted and unpleasa nt aspects of Victoria's character (her petula nce, arrogance, favour itism and 'r ight to privilege') are glossed over as e ndearing little 'whims'. Albert acts as a moderating influence when she goes too far. Th e film followed a year after the highly successful Victoria the Great (d. Herbert Wilco x, 1937). Again the screenplay is by Miles Malle son and Robert Vansittart, and many of the su pportin g cast (the cream of acting talent o f period ) repeat their roles, this time f or the colo ur camera s. This was the first full length Technicolor film of cinematogr apher Freddie Young, who captur es the spe ctacle of ro yal wedd ings, grand balls and op ulent interior s, with sc enes actually filmed at royal palaces. Vivid bat tle scenes, set in Alexa nder Korda's empire ter ritory (Sev astopol and the Sudan), rival those in The Four Feathers (d. Zoltan Korda 1939 ). The t itle music sets t he tone a regal choir sings ove r a shot of the crown . Elgar's 1901 'Pomp and Circumsta nce' march is heard during t he diamond jubilee celebrations and, as Vi ctoria's coffin lies in state, the f ilm concludes with Anth ony Collins' sta tely m usic accompanied by the text of Rudyard Kipling's 'Lest we f orget'. Combined with the emotional appeal of scenes of Victoria connectin g with her 'ordinary folk', this is stirri ng stuff. T he film conne cts with c ontemporary events of 1 938. T he release of tw o ce lebratory royal fi lms was intended to boost public affection for t he monarchy in t he wake of Edward VIII's abdication . Anglo-Germ an relations were another touchy subject. Wit h another wa r on the horizon, influential voic es wanted appeasement, and the fil m could be seen to fit that agen da. Victor ia herself was of mainly German descent, n ickname d 'the grandmother of Europe', w hile Albert is a 'good G erman', charmingly play ed b y Anton Walbrook as a c ultured, decent man. S ixty Glor ious Years now se ems unduly forma l and reverential. Had movies ex isted duri ng Victoria's reign (they onl y emerge d at the end) this might ha ve been the kind of film produced. Unli ke Mrs Brown (d . John Madden, 1997), it i s all so very 'V ictorian'. Roger Philip Me llor 星辰影院为您提供《荣耀六十年》完整未删减版免费在线观看。
