PANIC BEATS begins with a t otal ly nude w oman with welts on her body, running thr ough a misty forest full of decayed skele tons. A knig ht on horseback is chasing her, and we soon learn that he is Alaric d e Marn ac (a wicked chara cter Naschy first created for HORROR RISES FROM TH E TOMB), viciously killing her fo r her unfaithf ul ways. After the credi ts role, we are taken to the pre sent where a descend ent o f Marnac named Paul (Naschy) is married to the wea lthy Genevi ève (Julia Saly) was ha s some serious h eart problems. P aul decides to take he r to his ancestral home in the cou ntry fo r some peace and qu iet, but the sup erstitious-filled settin g opens a Pandora’s Box of terri ble occurrences. We soon discover that Paul is a r eal son-of-a-bitc h who plans to scare his wife to death , pl anning to contro l her fortu ne an d continue his secret affair w ith seductive bad girl Mireille (Silvia Miró), who happe ns to be the niece of the tarot card-reading hou sekeeper, Mabi le (Lola Ga os). Pau l’s malevolent scheme works, but he stil l has to worry about an ad ditional money-hungry mistress ( this gu y rea lly gets a round!), the unf orgi ving Mabi le, as well as new fianceé Mireille who might be hiding a thin g or two herself. More grisly murders follow, and the g host of Marnac returns from hell to punish the most de spicab le human cha racter in the f ilm. PANIC BEATS w as also written by Naschy (under his real name Jacinto Molina) who injects the fil m with an old-fa shion ed spooky h ouse motif, beefed up with a modern mo vie s ense of v iolenc e and sexuality. The film off ers nothing too innovativ e storywis e, and even Naschy admits on the disc’s extras that it was partly inspired by G ASLI GHT and REBECCA, b ut he seems to jus t toss i n a h odgepodge of exploita tion and horror ingredient s, whil e delivering a styl ish and enjoyable effort with a number of twists and s ome genuinel y chilling moments. The camera sho ts and ligh ting are both effective, a nd there's even does a cool set- up ( much like what Freddie F rancis did in THE SKULL and T HE C REEPING FLESH) where we see the poi nt of vie w of Marnac through his dark helmet as he stalks his female p rey. Graphic ally, we a re exposed to everything from a plate of bl oody eyeball s, to vic tims bein g beaten relentl essly with t he various Medieval weapons aff ixed on the hous e’s walls (for example, someone is axed in the stomach, followed b y the soak ed entrails oo zing out!) . Naschy’ s most frequent 1980s leading lady, Julia Saly, i s not given m uch t o do, but with her of fbeat looks, is a nice presence nonetheless. The prominen t female star here is Silvia M iró who is s een in the buff fr equently, a nd she certainly makes for so me well-ap preciate d Euro starlet e ye ca ndy.
